There are many possible causes of lower back pain. Teenagers are also sometimes affected by lower back pain from carrying heavy backpacks every day causing strain on the lower back.

The main causes of this pain are too little or too much work for the body. Individuals that have a very sedentary lifestyle may develop lower back pain because their muscles are weak. However, a person with a very active lifestyle may also develop it from overusing the back. The causes and treatment for this affection can vary with each individual.

Some of the causes of lower back pain are bulging or ruptured disc, sciatica, spinal degeneration, heavy lifting, osteoporosis, spinal stenosis and… age! All of these conditions can become serious if they are not treated early in their stage.

An example is a bulging or ruptured disc that is left untreated may get pushed in the spinal canal where it will lay against the lumbar and nerve roots. Besides causing severe pain, this condition known as cauda equine syndrome, can also cause permanent neurological damage.  Any time you suspect you are developing back problems, it is important to understand all the causes and treatment of lower back pain.

Many cases of lower back pain are caused by poor posture or improper sitting, lifting and bending. There are so many days of employment lost due to lower back pain in the employees, that many companies have pamphlets and seminars for their employees explaining and educating them on the causes and treatment of lower back pain. Many cases of lower back pain, or any back pain, could have been avoided with good ergonomics. Many dollars of money goes into workmen’s compensation claims for employee that developed work-related lower back pain.

Treatment for lower back pain will vary depending on the individual and the severity of the pain.

In most cases, surgery can be avoided. Most people that suffer don’t want to have to endure surgery unless they have no other choice. When you first hurt your back, it is important to put ice on the sore spot for up to 15 minutes every few hours on the first day or two of the injury or soreness. This is very important to avoid swelling. It also has sometimes made the difference of the pain getting better quicker or advancing to something more serious.

This is what the doctor will recommend when you see him for the causes and treatment of lower back pain. You will be advised to take pain reliever and anti-inflammatory medicine for first few days. If you are not better in a few days, your doctor will probably want to see you to take X-rays.

Unless something serious shows up requiring surgery, the doctor will usually recommend physical therapy, which is very helpful in most lower back pain cases. Physical therapy may feel painful at the time it is being done, but will help in the end. You will also be given exercises to do at home to make the pain lessen as well as protect your back in the future.

Lower back pain is causing a great concern in the United States. Moreover because it is in a recent study it is anticipated that four out of five adults in the United States will experience lower back pain in some point of their lives. Back pain being a common problem may sometimes hamper ones day to day life and may even lead to surgery. So it is always recommended to consult your physician even for the smallest back pain symptoms you will notice and get the advice before the problem grows.

Back Pain is indeed a very painful experience and ironically the severity of pain is often unrelated to the extent of physical damage it has caused. A simple strain can be extremely painful, while a herniated disk between vertebrate may cause little or no pain at all. That is why it is always beneficial that you may go in for many types of back pain tests that are available and can be administered to more accurately determine the cause of your pain.

Common causes of lower back pain can be found in the following:

  1. • Injury to the bones, joints or ligaments in the lower back
  2. • Smaller nerves running along and inside the spine becoming irritated or damaged
  3. • Strain to the lower back muscles, or erector spine
  4. • Damage to the inter vertebral disks, which separate the vertebrate
  5. • Irritated nerve roots connected to the hips, legs or even arms

At times many physical injuries can be attributed to specific incidents but still lower back pain may be slow-building, yet progressive. This can make it difficult to notice complicated lower back problems before they require treatment. Although lower back pain does not require emergency medical attention, a few symptoms may be signs of severe medical conditions.

Back pain as we have discussed is slow yet progressive and rarely requires emergency medical attention. But it is highly recommended that you consult your physician and follow his advice to avoid such emergency situations. In some cases if anytime you experience the following symptoms with a regular slow back pain you need to have an expert for emergency medical attention.

The symptoms are

  • Severe or constant pain in the lower back or abdominal region
  • Sudden bowel or bladder movements
  • A progressive feeling of weakness in the legs

An immediate medical attention saves you from any damage to your body and excruciating pain it may cause to you. For severe or chronic back pain, you should consider seeking lower back pain treatment, which is available in many forms. Lower back exercise can both help with back pain relief, and prevent it from recurring later. Most low back pain can be treated without surgery. Treatment involves using analgesics, reducing inflammation, restoring proper function and strength to the back, and preventing recurrence of the injury. Most patients with back pain recover without residual functional loss. Patients should contact a doctor if there is not a noticeable reduction in pain and inflammation after 72 hours of self-care. The best way is to take necessary precautions and make necessary changes in lifestyle, standing, sitting and sleeping positions and doing regular exercise. It is best to keep the back pain away from you and your family.

Back pain is a common problem that an individual of any age can face. An individual who lacks the knowledge of back pain will surely lead to serious back pain trouble. A person should be able to find and understand the underlying cause behind your back pain. It becomes your personal duty to identify the back pain symptoms before the condition goes worse. There can be varied reasons for acute back pain. Bu the most common reason for the chronic back pain is the muscle strain. Therefore it is advisable to work on your back pain much in advance in order to get healthy as soon as possible. Just know your back pain symptoms at an earlier stage so as to avoid back pain treatment.

At the initial stage it would be much better to detect back pain symptoms. Like say if you’re having pain while coughing or sneezing, acute pain does not allow you to sleep nicely, it does not allow you to walk properly because of chronic pain or sometimes you may feel as if your leg is deadened. You may also find difficult to pass urine. These symptoms have the ability to lead you to a serious health dilemma. The chapter of symptoms does not end over here as there are several other symptoms too to know.

Here are some commonly said symptoms which can be easily understand by every person rather than explaining in medical terms.

- A person suffering from acute back pain generally has the muscle strain problem. Particularly in this case your muscle turns to be stiff and does not stretch freely which results into persistent back ache.

- You may fell chronic pain because of arduous activity or if lifting any heavy objects. The pain may start suddenly or gradually and it may affect your spine which results in to lower, middle or upper back pain.

- Lower back pain symptoms can be noticed if sitting or standing for a long time. Sometimes sitting in an uncomfortable posture for long duration results into lower back to the buttock.

- Severer Low back pain that may be accompanied by muscle spasm, pain with walking, concentration of pain to one side.

- Even taking bed rest is also considered one of the symptoms for persistent back ache. In necessary times only it is advisable to take limited bed rest otherwise prolonged bed rest will counter for more pain and stiffness of the muscle.

Thus, an early stage diagnosis and precautionary measures taken will surely lead you to the betterment of your health. Fighting back at the initial stage only against back pain symptoms won’t put you in dilemma. To heal back pain you need to practice doing exercises on daily basis along with proper diet. Take care and be optimistic.

Several individuals all over the world are plagued by lower back pain. Lower back pain has different causes and different symptoms also arise. Back pain can be severe, chronic and acute. In search for answers, here are the causes, symptoms and treatment for the aching back.

Symptoms:

1. Severe pain in the back while lifting objects whether it is light or heavy.
2. Unable to stand up or walk because of pain in the back
3. Numbness in the back and spine
4. Pain is felt when coughing or sneezing
5. Pain that in the lower part of the body that lasts for hours or even longer.
6. Muscles are stiff or tender with combined pain.
7. The hips, legs, joints and knees are also in pain.

Causes:

1. Lumbar muscle strain – Strained muscles in the lower part of the body causing lower back pain.
2. Arthritis – A degenerative disease that affects the elderly. Joints in the hands, knees and other parts of the body are inflamed causing lower back pain.
3. Spinal stenosis – A condition wherein the spinal canal is constricted causing severe pain in the back.
4. Osteoporosis – Commonly affects the elderly. It is a kind of disease that weakens the bones causing generalized discomfort in the back or fractures as well.
5. Herniated disc – Also known as ruptured disc. The bones in the spine slips to its proper alignment and the nerve roots are pinned causing it to bulge hence lower back pain is felt.
6. Obesity – Obesity is a weight problem that also causes lower back pain in individuals. Because of excess weight, the spinal structure of the body cannot fully support the whole body causing pain in the back.
7. Pregnancy – Being overweight during pregnancy can also cause backache.
8. Kidney diseases – Kidney stones, kidney infection and kidney failure may help cause lower back pain.
9. Injury – Severe cases of accidents that causes injury like fractures, blow in the back, sudden impact due to falling from the bed or chair can also cause lower back pain.

Treatments:

1. Proper exercise can help relieve lower back pain. There are back exercises that can be applied to treat the hurting. Make sure not to exert more pressure because it can aggravate the pain in the back.
2. Diet – Nutritious foods should be in your diet to strengthen your body against diseases that cause back ailments. Foods rich in protein and calcium are needed to repair worn out muscles and to build up bone strength.
3. Medicines that can be purchased over the counter give temporary relief of lower back pain.
4. Heat pads and ice packs can be applied to the affected area in the back to stop the pain.
6. Herbs like ginger, capsaicin, and other herbs can also help alleviate lower back pain.
7. Surgery is the last resort if the pain in the back is severe and it cannot be treated by other remedies.

These are the causes, symptoms and treatments of lower back pain. A doctor’s advice should be the first priority for correct diagnosis and treatment.

There are many potential lower back pain remedies available for those suffering with pain in the lower back and sciatica.

An unsuitable remedy will not give you the effects you are hoping for. You may end up worsening the situation. Thus, it is important that you have the right information and the right guidance. You need to be careful when you are opting for a low back pain remedy. It is recommended that you seek advice from a qualified health care professional before starting any self-treatment.

For those patients who suffer from intolerable acute lower back pain, Transcutaneous Electric Manipulation (TENS) has been shown to be effective. The machine transmits electrical pulses through the electrodes that are connected to the skin of the lower back to energize the muscles.

If you see that even stretching is not giving you any relief, you must consult your chiropractor for other backache remedies. Sometimes, it can be caused if the different parts of the back are not aligned. Your chiropractor is the best person to guide you on whether your back is properly aligned or not.

Another lower back pain remedy that you can try is exercise. By doing exercises that can help you build up your core muscles, you can ensure that your back gets the support it needs. The stronger the core muscle, the less tension that your lower back will bear.

Correct and targeted stretching exercises could help you to prevent injuries, correct the muscle imbalances, and even treat your lower back problems. Besides, most pains that are caused by muscle and joints such as neck pain, shoulder pain, upper back pain, hip pain, knee pain, and ankle pain can be eliminated with some correct stretching exercises.

When the spinal column narrows, caused the wearing down of the discs, spinal degeneration takes place. You can suspect this type of lower back pain when you feel discomfort after standing or walking for longer periods or first thing when you wake up in the morning.

A commonly used remedy is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen or naproxen sodium. Tylenol is occasionally used as well however it is not an inflammation reducer. NSAID’s reduce lower back swelling and inflammation caused by injury. Use these as directed by your physician or by the manufacturer’s specifications.

Back pain relief is usually achieved with a combination of medication and physical exercises. The medication is taken to get relief from the pain. Muscle spasm is treated with relaxants and nerve pain with an anti inflammatory medicine. If the pain becomes manageable, the medication is discontinued and physical therapy or exercises are administered.b

Backache is commonly seen in those who have desk jobs or a sedentary lifestyle. You need to get some form of exercise and stretches to prevent any pain. Slouching and sitting in front of the television can also aggravate your pain. Stretching and standing every one hour and taking a walk around for a few minutes is a good lower remedy.

Acute lower back pain occurs suddenly. Very often, you will know exactly what causes it: an accident that jars your back, for instance, such as fall from a chair or a ladder. Or, you may simply stumble and pitch backwards to the ground.

Whatever the cause, you will probably strain and tear the ligaments, tendons and muscles in your lower back. All of these tissues are essential to your well-being, and any trauma affecting them produces severe pain.

A particularly severe accident will cause even more serious damage. This could be a fracture in the lumbar spine, or a break in the coccyx at the base of the spinal column. The pain from such injuries can be excruciating, as some of you may already know.

The cause of chronic pain, pain that continues for a long time or constantly recurs, can be more difficult to assess. It may cause by deterioration of the discs between the spine’s vertebrae. In other words, the discs may dry out, thereby allowing pressure to be placed on the nerves that run through the spine. The result is severe lower back pain, usually known as osteoarthritis.

Others suffer when the joints of the lower back become inflamed as rheumatoid arthritis enters their body. This condition is not only chronic, it steadily progresses through the system.

Another common cause of chronic lower back pain is osteoporosis, in which the bones of the spine become brittle and fragile because of hormonal changes or vitamin deficiencies.

Other causes of lower back pain

• Spondylosis – this occurs when the disc between the vertebrae of the spine distintegrate, allowing the vertebrae to rub against each other.

• Sciatica – degeneration of the spinal discs can also cause compression of the nerve roots in the lower back, resulting in intense pain.

• Lumber spinal stenosis – pressure on the spinal cord, a consequence of damage to the fiber that houses the cord, can lead to lumbar spinal stenosis. The most noticeable physical sign of this condition is the way that suffers must stand or sit with a hunched posture to ease the appealing pain.

• Depression – for 80% of those who have lower back pain, doctors cannot determine the cause. This adds to the depression that suffers often feel because they have no understanding or control of their disorder.

The CHI institute as recognized the desperate need for a consistent form of relief for lower back pain. Institute researchers studied the available remedies and learned from the practices of many different cultures and people, including the renowned qigong healers of Beijing, China. From these experiences, the institute began developing positive therapeutic solution to the problems of Lower Back Pain in both its forms, acute and chronic.

The Cost Of Neglecting Your Lower Back Pain Problem

Many people all over the world are suffering from hip and lower back pain. Rest assure if you are currently suffering from lower back pain. You are not alone. Lower back pain is the biggest dilemma that most people do not even think of it as being an issue, let alone getting the appropriate lower back pain treatment.

Your lower back pain will most likely to end up getting more serious and problematic, if you do not get proper treatment. So if you currently have any experiences with lower or any other type of back pain, you have to make sure that you see your doctor as soon as possible and start on the right path of treatment.

Determining Your Lower Back Pain Problem

Lower back pain can be caused by a number of different things and it is critical for you to determine what kind of back problem you have before start receiving any type of treatment. Before a doctor will even be able to begin considering what sort of treatment to give you for your back pain, they will need to do some tests to determine what is causing your pain.

These are some diagnosis tests that your doctor might perform:

1. X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, or myelograms. This will be useful in pinpointing broken bones or other skeletal defects.

2. Bone densitometry. This test measures the density as well as the strength of the bones. Your doctor might want to make sure that your spines themselves are alright.

3. EMG/NCV. EMG stands for Electromyelogram and NCV stands for nerve conduction velocity. They are useful to determine if there is neural problem or not.

4. Blood and urine test. This is to make sure that the pain is not due to an infection or other systemic type of problem.

5. Ultrasound study. This will tell if you lower back pain is coming from kidney stone or not.

You may or may not undertake all these tests. Your doctor will choose which kind of tests you need to go through by performing a pre-diagnosis.

Choosing Your Lower Back Pain Treatment

Once your doctor has been able to determine what your lower back pain is caused by, he will be able to move on and help you find the right treatment. Because back pain stems from a variety of causes, treatment goals are really pain relief and restored movement.

If your lower back pain is so severe that it is keeping you from your normal daily activities, obviously it is very problematic and you are most likely going to need to start on serious treatment right away. Your doctor will probably suggest you start on some medication, at least for a little while until you have your pain under control.

To get the best lower back pain treatment plan to follow, you need to work closely with your doctor. Work with your doctor as a team to ensure that going to have the most success in finding relief of your lower back pain. Back pain itself is a serious problem. However, it can also be a warning sign of a more serious health problem (such as kidney problem). So, make sure you go to see a doctor right away if you ever experience any lower back pain again and stop neglecting it.

Loosening the Upper Back for Fast Lower Back Pain Relief Using a Yoga Strap

In this exercise I will show you an exercise that I have shown you earlier for loosening the upper back for fast lower back pain relief but this time I will use a yoga strap. You can use a regular belt from the closet or you can buy a yoga strap from my site, or use your own yoga strap. I lie on my back flat on the table, or sticky mat, or yoga mat, or on the floor, and I take the strap; take it down around my ankles. When you lie on your back, you don’t want to be on a too soft of a surface; you want to be on a pretty firm surface such as this table. Now, my knees are bent; my feet are straight, not facing outward or inward, and flat on the table. I generally do this on the floor but today I’m doing it on a table. The strap is up close around my ankles, at the base of my ankles right at the top of my feet. The flat part of the yoga strap is on my skin, so it does not twist and cut into my skin when I tighten it. Now, remember, in order for me to perform this exercise I’m going to be turning my arms outwards, my palms facing outwards, to open up this chest and allow the upper back and the chest to open and lengthen and release, because that’s my goal here, so that I can find uniformity in the functionality of the spine, the movement of the spine. So the bottom part of the spine, where the low back pain is, doesn’t have to move too much like it normally does. Now, I reach for the ends of the strap at my ankles, and grab the strap, and I turn my hands outwards, clenched palms gripping the ends of the strap facing outwards, to open up my chest. And then I look at the ceiling, as I arch my back. I don’t want my neck to be turned sideways as I might damage my neck, and I don’t want you to get hurt either. Then I push my weight down to my feet. I push through my feet, and I start to lift my buttocks. What I’m doing is I’m basically cantilevering my up and on to my shoulders, and then I come back down. And then I go a little higher. Notice here that I don’t go very high when I first start doing this exercise; this is the level where I start. But as I do this more and more times, slowly; I wouldn’t really advice that you do it faster than normal. Just push into the feet, pushing yourself up gradually higher than your shoulders, keeping your knees parallel, and relaxing your neck so that you can get mobility in the upper back.

This exercise is a little bit more challenging of an exercise but it’s great for balancing the core musculature of the body, the foundation of the body, and giving support into the base of the trunk and the core structures. If you got lower back pain, this is going to be a really good for you, to learn how, basically, to get rid of that pain. I’ll teach you how in a moment. If you’ll do this correctly, this will get rid of a lot of your lower back pain. So, first, what I’m using here is a sticky mat. It’s a yoga mat, and you can get this all over the place; you can buy it from my website, you can buy it from probably Walmart, Ebay, all kinds of places. I really advise you get one, and add it to your tool set, for this course of series of exercises. This is one of the few things that you’ll need. They’re not too expensive, and once you have them you can just use them over and over again; they’re really your friends, and I highly recommend it. If you’re going to buy a sticky mat, get one that’s sticky, don’t get a slippery mat, there are some very expensive, fancy, slippery mats out there; they look nice, and with beautiful print, and artwork, and something like that, but from utilitarian standpoint they’re useless, so a cheap sticky mat will work; buy one. Alright, here we go. Now, to do this right is a bit of a challenge. This is important in performing this exercise successfully. So I lie down, first on my chest; I got my hands at about right underneath where the breast is, right underneath, in my case, where the pectoral muscles is, for a woman, that would be right underneath the breast, the thumb goes right under the breast, fingers are facing forward. As I lie down my feet; I’m on the tip of my toes, my toes are rounded a little bit; my heels are pointed towards the ceiling, elbows pointed towards the ceiling, close to the body. Now, I’m going to, straighten my legs, I’m going to contract and tuck my buttocks. I’m going to tuck my buttocks under so that my buttocks go down towards my feet, and I’m going to keep doing that, as I start to press into my arms and lift myself slightly above the floor, about two to three inches off the floor. Now, if you’re feeling some discomfort in your lower back, tuck your buttocks down towards your heels. If you do not have enough upper body strength the next version of this exercise will show you how to do this. Otherwise, just enjoy this one. If you’re feeling pain in your lower back when you’re doing this, you’re not doing it right. Tuck your tailbone down towards the direction of your heels more. Legs should be working like a hundred and twenty-five percent. You will really work your legs on this; the arms don’t do much work at all. The spine merely extends out of the support of the base of the body, the legs.

Hyperextension can aggravate the chronic lower back and hip pain. When you go shopping for a mattress always buy a soft mattress that is ideal for the curvature of your spine. This kind of soft mattress keeps the lower back in flexed position and slightly stretched, so that there is no nagging pain when you wake up.

Use legs not back:
Normally when we lift a weight we put great pressure on our back. Instead, keep your lower back in arched position and lift the load. Bend the knees and put the pressure on your leg muscles. An upright torso while lifting weights can always avoid the risk of chronic lower back pain.

Inclusion of a strict exercise regime for 30 minutes to one hour, everyday can alleviate chronic pain and prevent the occurrence of the same. Extreme lower back pain can be a very debilitating and frustrating condition. There can be several causes for this.

 Increasing age

Ageing means the deterioration in the strength and flexibility of the muscles and bones. The discs in the spinal column lose their fluid and elasticity, which adversely affects their ability to provide support and cushion to the spine.

Lifting heavy objects

When a weak or an old person tries to lift or pull anything that is too heavy for his strength, his muscles experience strain, sprain or spasm, which leads to pain in the back.

Degeneration of bones

Degeneration of the bones may lead to bone diseases like arthritis, osteoporosis, viral infections in the joints and some other abnormal conditions in the spinal column.

Weight gain

Weight gain due to obesity or pregnancy may cause posture problems and exert pressure on the muscles of the back and cause strain on them.

All these factors cause extreme lower back pain.

Treatment

Lower back pain can be treated by do-it-yourself efforts, if it is at its initial stage and has been caused by simple activities such as  lifting heavy weights, etc.

1. Rest

The pain can be relieved by lying in a posture that provides rest to the stressed back. This can be done by lying on the back on the floor and putting one or two pillows below the knees. This arrangement raises the hip slightly upwards and places the lower back flatly on the floor. A day or two of rest is likely to relieve the pain.

2. Exercises

Some simple exercises that stretch the lower back can also bring relief.
One exercise is to stretch the back by arching it. To do this, first lie with your face on the floor, put your hands on the floor and lift your upper body upwards so that it forms a slight arch. This will stretch your lower back. Stay in this position for 10-15 seconds and come back to the earlier position. Repeat this exercise 5-10 times.

Swimming, walking, yoga also helps to cure the extreme lower back pain.
 Hot packs, massage with balm or taking over-the-counter pain killers like aspirin also helps to relieve the back pain.
