Causes and Treatment of Lower Back Pain

Causes and Treatment of Lower Back Pain

There are many possible causes of lower back pain. Teenagers are also sometimes affected by lower back pain from carrying heavy backpacks every day causing strain on the lower back.

The main causes of this pain are too little or too much work for the body. Individuals that have a very sedentary lifestyle may develop lower back pain because their muscles are weak. However, a person with a very active lifestyle may also develop it from overusing the back. The causes and treatment for this affection can vary with each individual.

Some of the causes of lower back pain are bulging or ruptured disc, sciatica, spinal degeneration, heavy lifting, osteoporosis, spinal stenosis and… age! All of these conditions can become serious if they are not treated early in their stage.

An example is a bulging or ruptured disc that is left untreated may get pushed in the spinal canal where it will lay against the lumbar and nerve roots. Besides causing severe pain, this condition known as cauda equine syndrome, can also cause permanent neurological damage.  Any time you suspect you are developing back problems, it is important to understand all the causes and treatment of lower back pain.

Many cases of lower back pain are caused by poor posture or improper sitting, lifting and bending. There are so many days of employment lost due to lower back pain in the employees, that many companies have pamphlets and seminars for their employees explaining and educating them on the causes and treatment of lower back pain. Many cases of lower back pain, or any back pain, could have been avoided with good ergonomics. Many dollars of money goes into workmen’s compensation claims for employee that developed work-related lower back pain.

Treatment for lower back pain will vary depending on the individual and the severity of the pain.

In most cases, surgery can be avoided. Most people that suffer don’t want to have to endure surgery unless they have no other choice. When you first hurt your back, it is important to put ice on the sore spot for up to 15 minutes every few hours on the first day or two of the injury or soreness. This is very important to avoid swelling. It also has sometimes made the difference of the pain getting better quicker or advancing to something more serious.

This is what the doctor will recommend when you see him for the causes and treatment of lower back pain. You will be advised to take pain reliever and anti-inflammatory medicine for first few days. If you are not better in a few days, your doctor will probably want to see you to take X-rays.

Unless something serious shows up requiring surgery, the doctor will usually recommend physical therapy, which is very helpful in most lower back pain cases. Physical therapy may feel painful at the time it is being done, but will help in the end. You will also be given exercises to do at home to make the pain lessen as well as protect your back in the future.

Extreme Lower Back Pain— Causes and Treatment

Extreme lower back pain can be a very debilitating and frustrating condition. There can be several causes for this.

 Increasing age

Ageing means the deterioration in the strength and flexibility of the muscles and bones. The discs in the spinal column lose their fluid and elasticity, which adversely affects their ability to provide support and cushion to the spine.

Lifting heavy objects

When a weak or an old person tries to lift or pull anything that is too heavy for his strength, his muscles experience strain, sprain or spasm, which leads to pain in the back.

Degeneration of bones

Degeneration of the bones may lead to bone diseases like arthritis, osteoporosis, viral infections in the joints and some other abnormal conditions in the spinal column.

Weight gain

Weight gain due to obesity or pregnancy may cause posture problems and exert pressure on the muscles of the back and cause strain on them.

All these factors cause extreme lower back pain.

Treatment

Lower back pain can be treated by do-it-yourself efforts, if it is at its initial stage and has been caused by simple activities such as  lifting heavy weights, etc.

1. Rest

The pain can be relieved by lying in a posture that provides rest to the stressed back. This can be done by lying on the back on the floor and putting one or two pillows below the knees. This arrangement raises the hip slightly upwards and places the lower back flatly on the floor. A day or two of rest is likely to relieve the pain.

2. Exercises

Some simple exercises that stretch the lower back can also bring relief.
One exercise is to stretch the back by arching it. To do this, first lie with your face on the floor, put your hands on the floor and lift your upper body upwards so that it forms a slight arch. This will stretch your lower back. Stay in this position for 10-15 seconds and come back to the earlier position. Repeat this exercise 5-10 times.

Swimming, walking, yoga also helps to cure the extreme lower back pain.
Hot packs, massage with balm or taking over-the-counter pain killers like aspirin also helps to relieve the back pain.

If these simple steps do not show results, consult your doctor.

Lower Back Pain Causes

There are many reasons why we may experience lower back pain.  Some of the reasons that cause lower back pain are things like traumatic accidents, slip and falls, reaching for something, picking up an item without using the proper mechanics and poor posture.  Injuries include herniated discs, fractures to the vertebrae, facet problems, spondylolesthesis, degenerate disc disease, arthritis and others.   One of the most important things you can do is learn all that you can about your injury.  Learn what muscles groups are involved, what positions make your pain worse, what stretches can help alleviate pain, whether ice or heat is better.

Repetitive stress or strain is another major reason why people have lower back pain.  A person may pick up something that weighs 1 ½ pounds 40 times a day with bad mechanics and one day his/her lower back “goes out” and they will experience lower back pain.  It was not the weight that caused the person to have lower back pain, rather the poor mechanics the person was using to lift the light weight.  It’s like the old saying, the straw that broke the camel’s back.  That’s why it is important to learn good body mechanics and avoid repetitive stress situations and injuries.

Disc herniations are another major cause of lower back pain.  A disc can herniate for a number of reasons including trauma, twisting and forward flexing type activities and poor body mechanics to name a few. When a disc herniates, the outer wall of the disc is compromised and the disc material begins leaking out.  One of the worst positions for the spine, especially when you have a herniated disc is forward flexion and rotation which can cause the leak to increase even more.

Once the disc material begins leaking out, it can put pressure on your sensory nerves which in turn will cause pain.  If the material continues to leak out, it could also affect your motor nerves which mean that your muscle strength and coordination will be affected.  A microdisectomy procedure will remove only the disc material that has already leaked out.  A laminectomy procedure will remove part of the bone, lamina, to provide more room for the disc material to be without putting increased pressure on the sensory or motor nerves.

Arthritis in the spine is more common as we age.  An X-ray may reveal arthritis in the spine in our facet joints or areas around the vertebral bodies.  Typically arthritis type of pain is dull and achy and tends to be there all the time.  It has been described like a dull toothache.  It may be possible to shave down some of the arthritis, but it is important to understand what movements to avoid and what muscles to strengthen.

Learning the proper body mechanics, sitting mechanics and postural mechanics is really essential in living a life without lower back pain.  Understanding what type of body mechanics you need in order to lift 5 pounds versus 40 pounds is key to avoiding lower back pain.  Learning how to sit properly while at work, home or for recreation can help you avoid having lower back problems.  Learning to strengthen your lower leg muscles, gluts, abdominals and back muscles can really help you avoid lower back pain in the future.

Another important point is to learn how to stretch your muscles often to keep your body flexible and ready to perform the activities that you need it to.  It is important for everyone to learn more about how their bodies function, how their muscles work and how to maintain good body and postural mechanics.

Upper Back and Neck Pain Relief – Reading in Bed

Reading in bed may be the cause of why you are experiencing upper back, neck and even possibly shoulder pain. When you sustain a position for 20 or so minutes, the muscles that are creating the actions are shortening. In the case of sitting up or lying down in bed and reading, the pecs and the biceps are being used the most. When those muscles tighten without being allowed to re-lengthen, they create a scenario known as disproportionate muscle tension or DMT.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/Common Causes of Lower Back Pain:

For the majority of the people, pain at the lower back is the dilemma. They acquire this problem more frequently, and it recurs even after getting the treatment. This is also a reality that the pain at lower back is the leading medical condition with which the patients come to a doctor and take the treatment from the clinics and emergency department. Nevertheless; this is also a fact that many of the people who come with back pain are not found to have any lethal illness. The lower back pain could be developed due to a number of causes and its severity is also variable.

This should also be noted that the lower back pain could be due to some systemic problems. Therefore; a thorough medical checkup is necessary in case if pain at the back doesn’t relieve after taking conventional treatment. Strain in the muscles, presents at the lower back, is among the commonest causes of back pain. The muscles which are present at the lower back provide support to the spine, which bears the total body weight at the lower level. The stress at the lower back spine could be developed due to obesity and bad posture.

If the muscles present around the upper abdomen or on the stomach are weak, the chances of lower back pain would be increased. These muscles which are present at the upper level of abdomen also provide support to the spine. In case of their weakness, the total weight of the body is exerted on the lower spine, and hence a person feels discomfort while standing, walking and sitting, etc. It is therefore, necessary that the weight should be reduced by those individuals who are either obese or overweight. They should evaluate their posture and should correct it by themselves. They can take the help of a physiotherapist in this regard who can guide them how to decrease body weight and how to adopt a good posture for avoiding excessive weight exertion at the lower back spine. In addition, the physiotherapist may offer certain exercises, which can strengthen the muscles present at the lower back.

If pain at the lower back persists, the doctor should be consulted as soon as possible. Any pain that remains for more than three months is considered chronic, however; it does not mean that it could not be treated. A sharp pain which radiates down the leg should be evaluated by the health care provider on an immediate basis, since it could be due to nerve compression. In case of persistent pain, the soft mattress should be used during sleep. A lumber belt could help in maintaining good posture while standing, walking and sitting and hence a person may get much relief by wearing such belts. Painkillers are usually prescribed in these conditions, however; proper evaluation and diagnosis is mandatory before treatment.

Sinus Problems plus the Neti Pot If You Can’t Go System Surfing

Once my sister named me and asked how I would know I had a sinus infection. Other than tenderness and difficulty breathing, the major clue was green mucus. Back Pain is a complex problem and there is no simple answer to the question, What causes back pain?

One of the reasons that it is difficult to determine what causes back pain is that there are many structures that can be injured in the lower back (lumbar) region. You can injure the muscles, the ligaments, the intervertebral discs, the nerve roots, the cartilage that lines the joints, the bones in the lower back, over even the spinal cord. And of course you can injure multiple structures in the lumbar region.

Okay, I think you get the point that the lower back is complex.

Now, I want to try to simplify back pain and focus on Mechanical Back Pain (associated with osteoarthritis) which one type of problem that affects the lower back.

Mechanical Back Pain or Arthritis primarily affects the cartilage that lines the joints between the vertebrae of the lower back. It is referred to as mechanical back pain because compression (a mechanical phenomenon) is generally the cause of pain.

When the joints get compressed, the cartilage wears away. When the cartilage wears away, your joints get stiff and achy.

Here are 6 factors that can contribute to extra pressure on the joints of the lower back.

#1 A sedentary lifestyle and sitting in front of a computer puts extra pressure on the joints of your lower back. When you sit, your upper body weight is supported only by your lower back compared to when you are standing your ankle, knee, and thigh muscles take some of the pressure off your lower back.

#2 Bad Posture puts extra stress on the lower back. When your body is not in good alignment, you will have more pressure in the area that is out of alignment and you will also have less stability in that area.

#3 Weak Abdominal Muscles can increase the pressure on the lower back. The abdominal muscles help to maintain the position of the pelvis and lower back and stop the back from arching excessively.

#4 Weak Lower Back Muscles can increase the pressure on the lower back. The lower back muscles just like the abdominal muscles play a major role in stabilizing the lower back.

#5 Poor Flexibility can increase the pressure on the lower back. When your body is inflexible, it does not move efficiently. If your body is stiff in one area, extra pressure will be placed on another area to make up for the stiffness.

#6 Poor Exercise Technique and Poor Lifting Technique can increase the pressure on the lower back. Incorrect form during exercise and bad body mechanics during lifting will place extra stress on the lower back.

Above is just a quick and simple perspective on mechanical back pain. Prolonged sitting, poor posture, weak abdominal muscles, weak lower back muscles, poor flexibility, and incorrect exercise or lifting technique can all increase the pressure on the cartilage that lines the joints of the lower back.

As a physical therapist, I try to encourage people who suffer from a slightly achy lower back to get up from in front on the computer periodically to move around.

In addition, I encourage people to be mindful of their posture and exercise regularly to strengthen the abdominal and lower back muscles. And lastly, I encourage people to stretch regularly and use good lifting technique to decrease the pressure on the lower back.

Even though, I am a licensed Physical Therapist, this article is strictly for educational and informational purposes and is not intended to diagnose or treat back pain. If you are suffering from lower back pain, I advise you to see a licensed health professional and follow the advice of your doctor.

According to statistics, about three in every four people have experienced lower back pain at least once in their lifetime. Although many can have bouts with back pain, most of these attacks are not really serious. In fact, pain in that area is mostly caused by sprains and overstretching of muscles.

Lower back pain can range from mild to excruciating. If you have experienced the extreme type of ache in your lower back, you will agree that anyone who is suffering from it would be more than willing to drink anything just to ease the pain and be able to alleviate the stiffness. However, the treatment of this condition is actually dependent on the underlying causes. In order for you to get rid of your lower back pain for good, you first need to have an idea of what are the triggers for lower back pain.

Simple Lower Back Problem

Majority of cases of lower back pain fall into this category. Around 19 of the 20 instances of acute lower back problem can also be classified under this type, which is also known as non-specific type.

People usually experience simple back pain due to sprained muscles or ligaments. Many patients experience the pain right after bending or lifting very heavy objects. On the other hand, some feel the pain after a few hours or even days. In some instances, the pain can also be caused by slight problems with either the small joints or the disc located in the middle of two vertebrae.

This type of problem usually does not last very long. In fact, patients usually recover or report drastic improvement within 7 to 14 days. Statistics show that in some people, the pain can be dramatically relieved within a month; while in 9 out of 10 cases, the pain can be gone in less than two months. However, many also report recurrences of pain every now and then. Only a small number of cases result to chronic or long-lasting lower back woes.

Cauda Equina Syndrome

This is another underlying reason why people experience extreme aches in their lower back. Although this condition is quite rare, it is important to remember that this can be very serious and usually needs immediate medical attention.

A pinched nerve on the lower part of the spinal cord causes this syndrome. More often than not, this disorder is not only painful, but also impairs bowel and bladder functions. If you experience sudden weakness in one or both of your lower limbs and numbness in the area surrounding your anus, you need to call the doctor immediately. If not properly treated, the affected nerves might be damaged permanently.

Trapped Nerve

An irritated or strained nerve in the spinal cord is the main cause of this type of lower back pain. This can occur in about one for every 20 lower back pain cases. You will know that a nerve in the back is in trouble because you will really feel the ache along the path of the nerve. Usually, patients feel tingling pain or sensation down to the feet and legs. And sometimes, the pain you feel on your leg is much more severe than that on your lower back.

Arthritis

Another culprit for lower back problems is the inflammation of the spine joints. This is more common in elderly people. The most common type of arthritis responsible for such pain is osteoarthritis. However, young people who experience lower back pain due to joint inflammation might be suffering from Ankylosing spondylitis which can cause stiffness in the affected area.

The most common treatment for lower back pain is the use of anti-inflammatory drugs or painkillers combined with exercise and physical therapy. However, if the reason for your back pain is arthritis, you can look for supplements that contain glucosamine sulfate, which has been well documented to help ease arthritic pain and stiffness. One product that can help you alleviate lower back pain and improve your condition naturally is Flexcerin. For more information, visit http://www.flexcerin.com/

Lower Back Pain – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Lower Back Pain – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Low back pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder causing back pain in the lumbar vertebrae. It can be either acute, sub acute or chronic in its clinical presentation. Typically, the symptoms of low back pain do show significant improvement within two to three months from its onset. In a significant number of individuals, low back pain tends to be recurrent in nature with a waxing and waning quality to it. In a small proportion of sufferers this condition can become chronic.

What can cause low back injuries?

Many things can cause low back injuries–muscle strain or spasm, sprains of ligaments (which attach bone to bone), joint problems or a “slipped disk.” The most common cause is using your back muscles in activities you’re not used to, like lifting heavy furniture or doing yard work.

A lumbar strain is a stretching injury to the ligaments, tendons, and/or muscles of the low back. The stretching incident results in microscopic tears of varying degrees in these tissues. Lumbar strain is considered one of the most common causes of low back pain. The injury can occur because of overuse, improper use, or trauma. Soft-tissue injury is commonly classified as “acute” if it has been present for days to weeks. If the strain lasts longer than three months, it is referred to as “chronic.”

A herniated disc, often brought on by repeated vibration or motion (as during machine use or sport activity, or when lifting improperly), or by a sudden heavy strain or increased pressure to the lower back.

Osteoarthritis (joint degeneration), which typically develops with age. When osteoarthritis affects the small facet joints in the spine, it can lead to back pain. Osteoarthritis in other joints, such as the hips, can cause you to limp or to change the way you walk. This can also lead to back pain.

Lower Back Pain Symptoms

There are a few symptoms that indicate a possible serious medical condition requiring surgery. Patients with these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms include:

Sudden bowel and/or bladder dysfunction (cauda equina syndrome)

Progressive weakness in the legs (cauda equina syndrome)

How is low back pain diagnosed?

A thorough medical history and physical exam can usually identify any dangerous conditions or family history that may be associated with the pain. The patient describes the onset, site, and severity of the pain; duration of symptoms and any limitations in movement; and history of previous episodes or any health conditions that might be related to the pain. The physician will examine the back and conduct neurologic tests to determine the cause of pain and appropriate treatment. Blood tests may also be ordered. Imaging tests may be necessary to diagnose tumors or other possible sources of the pain.

Lower Back Pain Treatment

Exercise and keep going

Continue with normal activities as far as possible. This may not be possible at first if the pain is very bad. However, move around as soon as possible, and get back into normal activities as soon as you are able. As a rule, don’t do anything that causes a lot of pain. However, you will have to accept some discomfort when you are trying to keep active. Setting a new goal each day may be a good idea. For example, walking around the house on one day, a walk to the shops the next, etc.

Hip And Lower Back Pain ? Common Causes Of Lower Back Pain

Hip And Lower Back Pain ? Common Causes Of Lower Back Pain

Do you want to know why most people end up visiting a doctor? If lower back pain was your choice, then you would be right.

It happens so many times that it’s almost unbelievable. If you combine this information with the fact that most people are less active and live longer in our time, you might guess that it is the main reason why lower back pain exists in such large numbers today.

Whatever the origin of the lower back leg pain might be, I’m sure it’s very annoying. You go to a number of doctors, and nobody can help you with your problem. No cure seems to work.

It can be difficult dealing with back pain. Here are some of the things that might help you speed the healing process.

First of all, you should know that you will probably get the same treatments from doctors. You will have to answer a huge number of questions so they can understand what the problem is.

They will try to address the causes in the beginning because that decides what kind of treatment you should follow.

One of the biggest causes of back pain is stress. That happens because stress causes the muscles to tighten up. That is normal actually, since muscles need to do that in order to be able to take action.

Learning to relax is something you should learn to do. You can try going to an auction site such as eBay for example and buy a stress reduction or relaxation CD. You can find them cheap on this site.

Buy only one CD for now and listen to it on a regular basis. You can try for example to listen to it for 21 days. In the end you will see that you’ll be feeling a lot better.

Something that is quite common is muscle strains. In many cases, muscle strains commonly occurs in the neck area and lower back. That is because these muscle groups tends to be more fragile and when overstretch can lead to muscle strains.

Lower back muscles are infrequent exercised therefore the chances of getting lower back pain is higher.

Lifting and stretching can be useful in most problems we mentioned so far. You should learn how to pick up objects or how to lift them. This is particularly important as you get older and your back is more fragile.

Causes of Low Back Pain

Causes of Low Back Pain

Many of us suffer from low back pain. It is amazing that most of these problems are preventable. Generally, the majority of low back pain is coming from incorrect sitting, incorrect posture and improper lifting. For whatever reason, we become lazy and take shortcuts. This puts extra burden on the lower back which can lead to discomfort and pain.

Back pain is one of the main symptoms of preterm labor and is the second most common reason for a visit to the physician. By far the most common causes of back pain are “mechanical” caused by disc degeneration, muscle or ligament strain. But can sometimes be caused by a problem with the kidneys.

One of the causes of low back pain is when the joints fail to function properly. Between each of the cervical discs, there is soft tissue. This holds the discs together. There are certain conditions which may impact the joint from functioning properly. This can lead to stiffness in muscle pain.

Most people have the wrong conception as they think that softer mattress is more comfortable and therefore better for your back. Yet, the fact is that it is not good for your back. When you flip your body at night and turn along the bed, the soft mattress does not provide good support for your back muscles. The muscles will instead become tense and they are strained. This is the cause of the back pain and therefore, the soft mattress is not good for your back.

In the first part of this article, X-ray imaging, Computerized Tomography (CT) and Discography were identified as some diagnostic methods used in identifying the cause of low back pain in the body. In this second part, you are going to know of more methods or procedures.

Another cause for low back pain is a ligament tear or injury to the back muscles. Here it not the spine which is responsible for the pain but the muscles. You will experience muscle injury if you fail to execute your daily activities in a proper manner. Like when you are lifting a heavy object which can cause a tremendous strain on your back muscles if not don’t with care.

Bone lesions, nerve or muscle irritation is the reflection of low back pain. Although most of the people think that pain in low back is the result of some trauma but it is not always the case. Even viral infections result in pain in low back portion of the body. Other reasons for low back pain may be bone diseases or osteoporosis, arthritis, disc diseases, spine abnormalities etc.

SYSTEMIC DISEASE – This disease is the cause for up to 10% of back pain and largely among the elderly. Causes could be cancer-related or related to reduced bone mass or simply the aging process. Increasing or decreasing activities as well as switching positions all may have no affect on pain relief. Alternative therapies may be in need.

All of these tie in together and can be very complex. In order to have fantastic results and be pain free now and in the future all of these must be addressed. All too often patients will come to me after a health provider has attempted to focus one of the three and the patient gets mediocre results if at all.

3 Common Causes of Lower Back Pain

3 Common Causes of Lower Back Pain

Low back pain keeps you from enjoying the small things in life such as spending time with your kids, taking your pooch on his daily walk, playing a game of golf with your buds, or just lounging in your favorite chair watching television. Almost every movement you make involves the use of the muscles in your back.

So naturally, when your back is injured, the quality of your life will suffer drastically. Here are some common causes of lower back pain.

Improper Use of the Back Muscles

The most common causes of back pain are strains and sprains from injuries to the back due to improper use of muscles. Back muscles can inadvertently be injured from engaging in day-to-day activities such as heavy lifting, picking up children, improper bending, toting an oversized purse, slouching in your chair, sitting for long periods of time, and sleeping on a rickety old mattress.

Being overweight can also put extra strain on the muscles in your back and cause lower back pain. The onset of pain from strains and sprains can come immediately, or days later. When the muscles in your back are injured, they will knot-up, or spasm in an effort to prevent more damage. These spasms result in severe low back pain, and difficulty moving.

Slipped or Herniated Discs

Slipped discs, also known as herniated discs can result from several things including trauma to the back, disc degeneration, aging, sudden twisting movements, excessive pressure on the disk from heavy lifting, and being overweight. A slipped disc in the back puts pressure on the nerves, causes inflammation, and varying degrees of back pain.

A herniated disc can affect more than just the lower back area. If the damaged disc puts pressure on the sciatic nerve, it results in a condition known as sciatica. Sciatica causes burning and needle-like pains that shoot from the lower back, all the way down the distance of the back of the leg.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition that can affect several parts of the body, including the back. This condition doesn’t happen overnight; it gradually causes deterioration of the discs between the vertebrae that cushion the bones. Once these disks deteriorate, the vertebrae will press against each other and cause back pain and discomfort.

Osteoarthritis is more common in older people because the body changes as you age. Body parts travel south, skin starts to thin, and your bones become more fragile due to calcium loss. This loss of calcium makes your bones brittle and more prone to compression fractures that put you at risk for back pain.

Strains and sprains from improper muscle use, slipped discs, and osteoarthritis can all cause pain in your back. Thankfully, technological advances and improvements in modern medicine have made it possible for chiropractors to offer their patients several choices to manage or end debilitating back pain for good.

If you have pain in your lower back, don’t suffer in silence. Contact a back pain specialist to ask about available treatment options.

www.thewinnerguide.com — Causes Of Lower Back Pain As we get older, our bodies tend to lose their muscle elasticity and tone, as well as bone strength. The discs in our spine lose fluid and flexibility, and they cant cushion the vertebrae as well anymore. Aging is one reason we get lower back pain. If the muscles or ligaments in the back have a spasm, sprain or strain, the discs in the spine can rupture or bulge. That puts a lot of pressure on the nerves that are based in the spinal cord. When there is compression or irritation in those nerve roots, the back complains by giving us pain. What causes the back spasm, sprain or strain? Usually some form of trauma or injury, for example attempting to lift something too heavy, or overstretching. Degenerative diseases like arthritis or osteoporosis can also cause lower back pain. Other potential factors are congenital abnormalities in the spine, viral infections and irritation to the joints and discs. Some life conditions can also contribute to lower back pain. These include smoking, obesity, pregnancy weight gain, poor physical condition, stress, poor posture and poor sleeping position. Oftentimes, lower back and hip pain go hand in hand. Avoiding Lower Back Pain If you take proper care of your back in your day-to-day life, you can avoid lower back pain. Be sure to have correct posture and to lift with your legs (instead of using your back), as well as strengthening your back with exercises. Be sure that your workplace follows

Lower Back Pain Causes – Signs and Symptoms

Lower Back Pain Causes – Signs and Symptoms

All over the world, individuals who reach the age of 40 may feel the signs and symptoms of lower back pain. This may be due to the weakening support of the lower part of the spinal column to the upper rib cage.

The ligaments, muscles and bones are may also be weakened due to other Lower Back Pain Causes. Let us look into the signs and symptoms of lower back pain and how these causes affect our daily tasks and endeavors. Here are some.

Over weight – Being overweight is a problem to many people. Because of this the excess muscle, fats including the other parts of the body there is too much pressure for the bones to support it hence, causing lower back pain for obese people.

It is best to lose some of the weight to lessen the stress and strain that supports the entire body.

Aging – As related earlier, as we grow older, the bones structures and muscle supports slowly degenerates. Well, it is quite inevitable to feel lower back pain because of these causes related to aging. Proper diet can be the best remedy for this just to support the strength of our body system.

Accidents – Another possible cause of lower back pain is due to accidents like falling, a blow on the pelvic part or back part of the body and some related accidents that may happen to many people. First aid can be applied or immediate action to go to the doctor must be done in case it is severe.

Sciatica – this is usually caused by a compressed sacral nerve within the spinal cord. This may be due to pregnancy in women because of the pressure of the uterus in the sciatic nerve. Correct posture and simple and gentle exercise may help relieve the pain.

Degenerative diseases – Degenerative diseases like multiple sclerosis and arthritis may severely damage the joints causing acute lower back pain. The legs are also affected because of the nerve pressure and bone density loss.

Proper diet and proper consultation to the doctor should be done for further treatment and prescription of medicines for degenerative diseases.

Osteoporosis – This is also a form of degenerative disease. The bone density is becomes textured and may become harder causing it to be brittle. As these progresses, the spinal cord nerves may be trapped and pressured thus, causing lower back pain.

A physiotherapist may help in lessening the pain or proper diet with lots of calcium intake may help strengthen the bones. Also, make sure that a regular check up must be done by a doctor to properly diagnose the problem of osteoporosis.

Herniated disc – This may be due to strenuous activities like sports, weight lifting and construction works. Lifting weighty materials may cause the disc in the pelvic region to slip causing more pain at the lower back including the legs.

Spinal stenosis – This is normal in aging individuals. The spinal canal continuously narrows down resulting to pressure in some nerves at the spine and bones.

These are just some of the many causes of pain in the lower back part of the body. Remember to keep a healthy living and diet to help alleviate the pain.

The pelvis, thigh bone and femur are together at hip joint. These bones have cover of articular cartilage, a different matter. It works as a shock absorber. Contraction and expansion with the pressure helps to protect the bones. The hip joint has a lubricating substance around the muscles. The hip joint has the capsule which can go in any direction as hip joint is the ball and socket joint. The nerves around this area come from lower back.

The causes of the lower back pain and hip pain occur at the same time are as follows.

Nerves serving the hip come from lower back and they are affected with neurological problem. Any muscle injury in lower back may affect hip muscles. This will be resolved automatically. But it is not easy to face such pain. Arthritis will affect both the organs hip and back.

From aging and use a situation arises where the fluid filled sacs get inflammation and this causes pain. An old age person may get fracture with the gentle fall. It could not be operated and hence the patient has to face the problem for his whole life.

Lower back pain can be treated with the regular treatment. After finding out the causes of the back pain doctor will suggest some medication with the exercise routine and the improvement in daily habits. Any change in the back pain should be pointed to your doctor. If there is pain in hip you should immediately contact your doctor because it may be a serious symptom of any other problem like arthritis or congenital hip problem. This is the situation where hip joint ball is not seated properly in the socket. If the socket is shallow the ball will move from the edge of the socket.

If your two legs are of different length then you might be facing the problem of hip pain. The arthritis also needs different treatment. These treatments are to be followed for longer period.

Treatment includes use of heat and cold water. Weight control and medicines against inflammation is necessary. Lower back and hips together give support to our whole body hence the attention to their problem is must for us to stand with strong support.

Lower Back Pain Causes, Symptoms, Treatments and Exercises

Lower Back Pain Causes, Symptoms, Treatments and Exercises

One of the very common medical problems is low back pain. Lower back pain is pain felt and travels in the ribs particularly in the back or in the upper part of legs. This pain starts suddenly and could be the follow up of strain or an injury. Sometimes the pain may not have anatomical cause. Sit up or turn over posture may be difficult and the worse could be bending or sitting. Even a sneeze or a cough can be painful.

Back pain normally gets resolved within weeks but the pain undergone by the patients is unbearable. Conservational treatments are normally taken for lower back pain since it is temporary and slowly resolve with time.

For a speedy recovery, proper treatment has to be started only after knowing the exact cause for its occurrence. The main reason for lower back pain can be Lumbar muscle strain and ruptured disc or herniated disc. Disc damage in the inter vertebral column leads to Discogenic lower back pain and this could be diagnosed using discogram. But this in no way relates to herniated disc where the back gets pressed to the nerve. Aging population come across Spinal stenosis as the spinal canal is thinned. This may happen due to arthritis or any other specific conditions. Any joint ache is termed arthritis and particularly on the spine creates lower back pain.

Spinal stenosis causes back pain in the aging population. As we age, the spinal canal can become constricted, due in part to arthritis and other conditions. If the spinal canal becomes too tight, back pain can be the result. Spondylolisthesis occurs due to the instability of adjacent vertebras which start to slip. This results in unstable spine and ends in lower back pain. Osteoporosis Leads to many orthopedic complications and is mostly referred as the compression fractures of vertebral column. This weakens the bones and hence the possibilities of getting fractures are more .If back pain continues for 6 weeks or less it’s referred as acute. If this continues for less than 12 weeks it is described as sub-acute. It’s termed as chronic if it persists for more than 3 months.

Diagnosis is helped by blood tests and scan but not to a greater extent and X rays are not advised due to high radiation. Muscle strain heals quickly as the blood supply is good and carries the needed nutrients with proteins for healing. Bed rest is advised for severe pain but not for two days or more. Hot or cold application eases the pain to a certain extent. People who are active with good physique can avoid low backache, as there will be regular stretch of muscles. The supporting muscles of the spine are extensors, which include back and gluteal muscles, Flexors, which comprise abdominal and iliopsoas muscles and the last one is the side muscles also called as rotators. It’s also referred as Obliques .Not all these muscles are used in day-to-day life and they get weakened with age.

Lower backache exercise program should combine stretching and strengthening exercises with aerobics. Common symptoms of lower back pain for people less than 60 year old will be pain in legs or numbness and pain during movement and sitting. Older people will have symptoms like increase of back pain during the morning g and evening periods with stiffness in the back and. pain is also felt downwards in the legs. Psychological reasons play main role on pain levels and so person’s attitude and situation plays an active role.

Neurological symptoms like weakening, feeling of numbness or tingling sometimes accompany pain. Immediate attention is needed if there is a dysfunction in bladder or in the bowel and weakness or numbness in the groin.

Precautions like avoidance of stress and maintaining proper weight with regular exercise help in eliminating the problems of lower back pain.

Low Back Pain Causes

Low Back Pain Causes

What causes low back pain?

Low back pain is often caused by overuse, strain, or injury. For instance, people often hurt their backs playing sports or working in the yard, being jolted in a car accident, or lifting something too heavy.

Aging plays a part too. Your bones and muscles tend to lose strength as you age, which increases your risk of injury. The spongy discs between the bones of the spine (vertebrae) may suffer from wear and tear and no longer provide enough cushion between the bones. A disc that bulges or breaks open (herniated disc) can press on nerves, causing back pain.

In some people, low back pain is the result of arthritis, broken vertebrae (compression fractures) caused by bone loss (osteoporosis), illness, or a spine problem you were born with.

Often doctors don’t really know what causes low back pain. But it is more likely to become long-lasting (chronic) if you are under stress or depressed.

What is low back pain?

Low back pain can affect the back anywhere below the ribs and above the legs. The lower back is the connection between the upper and lower body, and it bears most of the body’s weight. Because of these roles, it is easily injured when you lift, reach, or twist.

Almost everyone has low back pain at one time or another. The good news is that most low back pain will go away in a few weeks with some basic self-care. But if your pain is severe or lasts more than a couple of weeks, see your doctor.

What are the symptoms?

Depending on the cause, low back pain can cause a range of symptoms. It may:

Be dull, burning, or sharp. Come on gradually or suddenly. Be felt at a single point or over a broad area. Occur with muscle spasms or stiffness. Cause leg symptoms, such as pain, numbness, or tingling, often extending below the knee. These symptoms can occur on their own or along with low back pain. Leg symptoms are often caused by lower spine problems that place pressure on a nerve that leads to the leg.

Emotional Causes Of Hip Pain

Emotional Causes Of Hip Pain

Having suffered from hip pain myself, I know how frustrating and painful it can be, but did you know that your diagnosis might be incorrect and that it may be possible for you to heal yourself? Chronic hip pain is typically diagnosed as one of three possible syndromes: tendonalgia (also known as tendonitis), arthritis or bursitis, all of which may be misdiagnoses for the actual origin of your pain.

Arthritis – arthritis can be either rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. Many people with hip pain are given a diagnosis of osteoarthritis (wear and tear on the joint, usually seen on an x-ray) and assume that they will be dealing with anti-inflammatory medication and pain for the rest of their lives. In many cases when pain is attributed to osteoarthritis the real cause is something completely different. Yes, you may show some moderate wear in your hip joint, but the pain may in fact be caused by tension myositis syndrome (TMS).

Bursitis – a bursa is a structure that protects underlying bone in areas of high pressure. Bursitis can affect the shoulder (subacromial bursitis,) or the hip, (trochanteric bursitis.) But in a lot of patients bursitis is a misdiagnosis and the real cause is TMS related tendonitis.

Tendonitis – is a group of disorders attributed to a painful tendon inflamed due to overuse. In certain clinics, it has been found that tendonitis is caused not by overuse, but by a subconscious pain creating mechanism of our own minds called tension myositis syndrome (TMS).

TMS, or tension myositis syndrome, is a painful condition caused by our subconscious mind. It is mistakenly diagnosed by doctors as many other conditions, including; bursitis, osteoarthritis, tendonitis, pinched nerves, eczema, and ruptured discs, just to name a few. The pain caused by TMS is real, but the reason for the pain is not due to a physical abnormality and therefore can be easily healed. TMS is used by our subconscious to divert our attention from the even more painful emotions of anger and resentment.

Since it is objectionable in most cultures to express anger and resentment we condition ourselves to hold it in. The amount of energy associated with negative emotions is quite great and your mind’s way of dealing with this repressed negative energy is to ‘put’ it somewhere in your body, such as your hip, shoulder, low back, or neck. Your subconscious mind then creates a painful condition, such as tendonitis, by restricting the oxygen and blood flow to the area.

TMS is little known in most medical circles, so asking your doctor about it will most likely do you little good. For more information about TMS and to see whether it might be affecting you, look for Dr. John E. Sarno’s book Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection . In it, he describes in great detail how TMS manifests. I have used and perfected a number of mindbody healing techniques to heal myself from chronic neck, back, and hip pain and you can too.

Back Pain: 5 Common Causes of Lower Back Pain

Back Pain: 5 Common Causes of Lower Back Pain

What Causes Back Pain & How to Get Relief From It?

Understanding the causes of back & neck pain is the key to applying the correct treatment to get relief from it.

Because back pains are often difficult to treat effectively, a better understanding of the causes of your back discomfort will assist in curing it.

The following are the 5 Common Causes of Back Pain

Posture

A bad posture can increase stress to the muscles, nerves, or ligaments in the lower back.

For example sitting in front of your computer all day in a chair that is not ergonomically suited for your back will almost certainly result in poor posture & therefore increase back stress and cause lower back problems.
Weak Abdominal Muscles

Having weak abs places more stress on the lower back during certain movements thereby causing pain.
Lumbar Muscle Strain

Lumbar muscle strains are the most common cause of low back pain & most cases of back discomfort from muscle strains are resolved completely within a few weeks.
Being Overweight

Being overweight and not getting enough physical activity will usually stress the lower back causing pain.
Slipped Discs & Other Spinal Conditions

Slipped discs, pinched nerves, sciatica, aging, degenerative discs, compression fractures, spinal tumors and infections are other common causes of lower back pain.

If you have any of these symptoms you should seek out professional diagnosis before embarking on any exercise regime.

It’s interesting to note that back pain is a common condition that affects up to 90% of Americans at some point in their lives.

However, whilst most episodes of back pain only last a few days and have completely resolved within a few weeks, you should get medical advice or go to your doctor if you have new back problem for further evaluation.

Causes of Lower Back Pain and Hip Pain

Causes of Lower Back Pain and Hip Pain

One thing in common we all have is that someday we all have some sort of lower back pain. Usually a bump, bruise or accident will cause the lower back pain. These are usually mild cases and only require treatment that is very easy to do.

Others will find they have back pain and don’t know what caused the pain and there is no way to control the occurrence of the pain. Spinal conditions are a reason for back pain and many are born with this condition. The sooner you can find the source of the pain, the sooner you and your doctor can treat that back pain and hopefully reduce or eliminate the back pain for good.

Consider these things if you are under 60 years old Age and lower back pain do play a role. Older people, usually those over 60, are categorized into a separate group. They often suffer from conditions such as arthritis and other degenerative conditions that are known to cause back pain.

For the people who are under sixty, there are really 3 main group or categories. These are characterized by some common symptoms:

Disc herniation – results in pain and numbness in the legs. Can get worse with long periods of sitting or standing. Degenerative disk disease – this is characterized with pain when making certain moves or specific positions. This can also become chronic and extremely painful. Stress fractures – pain when walking or standing and this can be very painful also. Information for the older people One common cause of pain for the elderly is osteoarthritis. This health condition leads to stiffness and usually is worse in morning or evening.

Another type or cause for the elderly is lumbar spinal stenosis. What happens is there is pressure put on the nerves of the spine and usually will cause pain in the legs. Low back pain by disc degeneration is also common.

Muscles around and supporting the discs go into a spasm causing chronic back pain. Mechanical pain is common because the disc that is degenerating is becoming inflamed. By replacing the bad disc with an artificial one you help relieve the pain associated with degenerative disc disease.

Less know conditions for low back pain Some of the lesser known conditions of low back pain make it more difficult to diagnose therefore making it more difficult to treat.

Causes of lower back pain:

Infection Spinal tumor Fibromygalia Sacroiliac joint syndrome Piriformis syndrome Sciatica Poly neuropathy All of these can be causes of low back pain, even though they are more uncommon. They still can be treated, when diagnosed correctly.

A reason to be happy By determining the cause of your low bac and hip pain, you can find relief and treatment to start toward recovery. Understanding how to prevent and treat the back pain can definitely make you happy.

Low Back Pain Causes, Symptoms and Treatment of Low Back Pain

Low Back Pain Causes, Symptoms and Treatment of Low Back Pain

Low back pain

Low back pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder causing back pain in the lumbar vertebrae. It can be either acute, sub acute or chronic in its clinical presentation. Typically, the symptoms of low back pain do show significant improvement within two to three months from its onset. In a significant number of individuals, low back pain tends to be recurrent in nature with a waxing and waning quality to it

Back pain affects 80% of Americans at some time in their lives. It comes in many forms, from lower back pain to neck pain to sciatica. Back pain is not a diagnosis — it’s a symptom of an underlying condition.

Causes of  Low Back Pain
Anyone who has ever suffered from a bad back will know how much pain and discomfort can be exacerbated by a poor mattress, but it is not just those with existing back complaints who can benefit from a good mattress; back pain may actually be preventable by investing in a good quality mattress and bed.

Muscle strains are the most common cause of low back pain. Patients may or may not remember the initial event that triggered their muscle spasm

Some of the more common causes of lower back pain are:
Sudden injury to the back such as may occur in an auto accident, fall, sports, or other manner.
Stress to the muscles, nerves, or ligaments in the lower back.

Symptoms of  Low Back Pain
Low back pain means a pain or ache somewhere between the bottom of the ribs, at the back, and the top of the legs. The pain often begins suddenly, and may follow an obvious strain or injury, but may seem to come on “out of the blue”, or come on slowly.

Symptoms in the low back can be a result of problems in the bony lumbar spine, discs between the vertebrae, ligaments around the spine and discs, spinal cord and nerves, muscles of the low back, internal organs of the pelvis and abdomen, and the skin covering the lumbar area. Pains in the upper back can also be a result of disorders of the aorta, chest tumors, and inflammation of spine.

Treatment of  Low Back Pain
Sleeping with a pillow between the knees while lying on one side may increase comfort. Some doctors recommend lying on your back with a pillow under your knees.

Stay active – It’s important to return to your normal level of physical activity as soon as possible. Staying active will help your back to get better, and reduces your risk of getting simple back pain again.
Stay positive – remember that back pain usually goes away quickly.

Safely issues – Many CAM treatments are believed to be safer and to have less side effects than conventional treatments, especially pharmaceutical treatments. But side effects are often only discovered after very large extensive studies have been done or even after they have gone to market. A CAM treatment may have not been studied extensively enough to uncover potential safely issues.

It is important that you discuss the potential risks, complications, and benefits of spinal surgery with your doctor prior to receiving treatment, and that you rely on your physician’s judgment. Only your doctor can determine whether you are a suitable candidate for this treatment.

Pain | What are the Causes of Hip Pain, are You at Risk?

Pain | What are the Causes of Hip Pain, are You at Risk?

Hip pain is a common problem, and it can be confusing for you because there are many causes. It is important to make an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your symptoms so that appropriate treatment can be directed at the underlying problem.

HP is very common and can result from numerous different causes. Pain tends to occur commonly in certain age groups – the young (from 0 to 15 years) and older population (45 years of age).

In 1990, researchers estimated that the number of hip fractures would exceed 500,000 by the year 2040 (Cummings et al)Women sustain about 80% of all hip fractures (Stevens et al. 2000).

Hip pain treatment must be directed at the specific cause of your problem. Some signs that you should be seen by a doctor include:

* Your inability to walk comfortably on the affected side of your body

* Injury that causes deformity around your hip joint

* HP that occurs at night or while your resting

* HP that persists beyond a few days

* Your inability to bend at your hip

* Swelling of your hip or in the thigh area

* Signs of a hip infection, including fever, redness, warmth

* Any other unusual symptoms in your hip

Hip pain can have many causes and can happen at all ages, though for very different reasons.

One of the most common causes of pain if you are elderly is arthritis. Most often this is in the form of osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic arthritis, and many other forms of lesser-known types of arthritis can also cause HP.

The second most common cause of hip pain among the elderly is due to fractures from falls. In fact, osteoarthritis actually causes many of the falls that result in hip fractures. Often the pain is due to fractures must be treated with hip replacement surgery to relieve severe chronic hip pain.

Hip pain may also be caused by bursitis, synovitis, or tendonitis. These conditions are most often seen in those involved in athletic activities.

Muscle strains and sprains within the muscles adjoined to the hip can also cause pain and may involve microtears. These causes of HP effectively treated with physical therapy. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications are also used as over the counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or can involve prescribed medications that are either taken orally or injected into the hip area to relieve your pain.

Long-term use of cortisone injections for treatment can cause hip pain. This is due to avascular necrosis. This occurs when there is a loss of blood supply to the bone. The bone then begins to deteriorate. This condition can also be caused by a transplant or from Perthes disease. This disease is a cause of hip pain in children that primarily affects boys between the ages of 5-10. In most cases avascular necrosis, however caused, results in hip replacement surgery.

Another reason for hip pain in children is from congenital dislocation of the hip. This can usually be corrected without the need for surgery. Another cause, in children or adults, is viral illness. HP may also be caused by various malignancies, though this is rarer.

Hip pain may also be caused by Pagets disease, which occurs in adults.

Due to the varying causes of hip pain, it is important to take your personal history into account and consult with your doctor, as well as, the use of surgery, physical therapy, and medications, walking aids may also be appropriate and necessary depending on the cause of your pain.

Sciatic Pain Treatment By Spinal Decompression

Sciatic Pain Treatment By Spinal Decompression

If you have ever felt a burning, numbing or stinging pain in your lower back, thigh, buttocks or leg then you are no stranger to sciatic pain.  Sciatica is a very common complaint amongst people suffering from lower back and hip pain.  There is a new sciatic pain treatment called spinal decompression and one of the most successful devices is the DRX9000 True Non-surgical Decompression System.

DRX9000 True Non-surgical Decompression System

DRX9000 True Non-surgical Decompression System

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve or by compression of the discs in the spine.

Problems with the sciatic nerve can be caused by such conditions as degenerative disc disease, bulging discs, herniated discs or piriformis syndrome. Even though similar symptoms may be caused by quite a few different conditions, the only conditions that are related to the spinal discs are bulging discs, mediated discs and degenerative disc disease.

Symptoms of Sciatica

If the sciatica is caused by one of the spinal disc conditions mentioned above then the patient may experience burning or stinging pain in the lower back which will eventually be felt along the buttocks and down the leg even, in some cases, causing numbness in the foot.

Without treatment it is not uncommon for a person to be incapacitated to such a degree that they are unable to complete in normal daily activities. This can cause a runoff effect leading to such things as depression.

How To Treat Sciatica

When considering a treatment for this condition to get pain relief, your doctor will take into consideration several things including overall health, age, past medical history and the severity of the sciatic condition. Common treatments recommended by physicians for sciatica include pain medications, alternative treatments like acupuncture, physical therapy, bed rest and even surgery.

Non-surgical Spinal Decompression

A new treatment, called non-surgical spinal decompression, is now proved very successful in providing relief from the pain associated with bulging or herniated discs and degenerative disc disease. A relatively new device called the DRX9000 True Non-surgical Spinal Decompression System that applies the compression forces to the damaged spinal discs and relieves the pain associated with the symptoms of sciatica.

The main benefit of this system is that it is both non-invasive and non-surgical. More and more back specialists are learning about this new non-surgical spinal decompression treatment.
