Causes and Treatment of Lower Back Pain

Causes and Treatment of Lower Back Pain

Causes and Treatment of Lower Back Pain

There are many possible causes of lower back pain. Teenagers are also sometimes affected by lower back pain from carrying heavy backpacks every day causing strain on the lower back.

The main causes of this pain are too little or too much work for the body. Individuals that have a very sedentary lifestyle may develop lower back pain because their muscles are weak. However, a person with a very active lifestyle may also develop it from overusing the back. The causes and treatment for this affection can vary with each individual.

Some of the causes of lower back pain are bulging or ruptured disc, sciatica, spinal degeneration, heavy lifting, osteoporosis, spinal stenosis and… age! All of these conditions can become serious if they are not treated early in their stage.

An example is a bulging or ruptured disc that is left untreated may get pushed in the spinal canal where it will lay against the lumbar and nerve roots. Besides causing severe pain, this condition known as cauda equine syndrome, can also cause permanent neurological damage.  Any time you suspect you are developing back problems, it is important to understand all the causes and treatment of lower back pain.

Many cases of lower back pain are caused by poor posture or improper sitting, lifting and bending. There are so many days of employment lost due to lower back pain in the employees, that many companies have pamphlets and seminars for their employees explaining and educating them on the causes and treatment of lower back pain. Many cases of lower back pain, or any back pain, could have been avoided with good ergonomics. Many dollars of money goes into workmen’s compensation claims for employee that developed work-related lower back pain.

Treatment for lower back pain will vary depending on the individual and the severity of the pain.

In most cases, surgery can be avoided. Most people that suffer don’t want to have to endure surgery unless they have no other choice. When you first hurt your back, it is important to put ice on the sore spot for up to 15 minutes every few hours on the first day or two of the injury or soreness. This is very important to avoid swelling. It also has sometimes made the difference of the pain getting better quicker or advancing to something more serious.

This is what the doctor will recommend when you see him for the causes and treatment of lower back pain. You will be advised to take pain reliever and anti-inflammatory medicine for first few days. If you are not better in a few days, your doctor will probably want to see you to take X-rays.

Unless something serious shows up requiring surgery, the doctor will usually recommend physical therapy, which is very helpful in most lower back pain cases. Physical therapy may feel painful at the time it is being done, but will help in the end. You will also be given exercises to do at home to make the pain lessen as well as protect your back in the future.

Back and Hip Pain – Free At last

Free at last from back and hip pains

When I was in my 20’s I used to think that I would live eternally young. Well I didn’t believe that, but like most young people I acted it. By not really eating healthy and exercising daily etc.

Like most young people I didn’t follow a healthy life style until many years later. Well now I’m over my 40’s and find that every morning when I wake up I would be totally stiff and painful in my back. Not really able to straighten up for a while. After a little while of warming up I find that the back pain would subside and leave and I’ll be OK.

But I also noticed that when I did leg raises that I would develop hip pain (more like sciatica).

Well everyone says that when you are over 40 you are over the hill, and that my symptoms were of old age so it was natural for me to have back and hip pains. But I didn’t swallow that one. Even though I know that any young reader in their 20’s would say that I am over the hill but I really don’t believe so. (Or maybe i don’t want to accept it …hahaha).

Well while searching online for information I stumbled across this new machine called The Pain Zapper. The information presented on the website was interesting. The Pain Zapper looks like a TENS unit but it is much different. The Pain Zapper has various modes for treatment especially the acupressure mode to relieve pain.

Well the unit was not costly and I was tired of having these issues of back and hip pains so I decided to buy it.

But before giving you my experience with back and hip pain and how the pain zapper helped me I want to tell you that I also discovered that certain foods were causing or aggravating my back pain.

I realized that when I stopped eating wheat and high protein foods (soy, meats etc) that after a few days my back was much improved and not as painful in the morning. Adding an exercise program to my schedule also made a big difference.

When I received The Pain Zapper I studied the manual. The manual tells you where to put the electrodes for different types of pain. I search for the back and hip pain points and applied the electrodes.

I was recommended to only apply it for 5 minutes and to use the acupressure mode.

I really thought that five minutes would not be enough. But to my surprise my pain had reduced by over 80% with the first application. Wow! I was really surprised.

I was really happy with the results I obtained because I am the type of person that doesn’t like to be taking medications for pains. They only give you temporary relief. I have found that using the pain zapper in acupuncture mode (no needles) keeps me pain free.

Now I find that I don’t really need to use it anymore since my back and hip pains have not bothered. But if it does flare up because of certain foods I eat or heavy work then I’ll use the pain zapper and I’ll be better again in about 5 minutes.

What I like about it is that I can use it with any other type of muscular pain : shoulder pain, knee pain, neck tension, etc

Of course, I really recommend that you follow a complete healthy life-style. You should:

1) Exercise no less than 4 times a week

2) Do a careful analysis of your diet to find out if any of the foods you are eating may be causing or aggravating your back pains. I know that many who suffer from these pains have at some time been injured in someway. But even in these cases avoiding certain high protein foods and animal fat can help in reducing inflammation.

3) And I highly recommend using the pain zapper for instant pain relief.

Why Cholesterol is Essential to Your Health

What many people do not realise is that cholesterol is not the villain; inflammation is. However, despite the mounting evidence to support this, statins still remain the treatment of choice by most doctors… If cholesterol is such an essential life-force helping our bodies to function optimally (and heal itself properly), it makes no sense why the medical mainstream has turned lowering cholesterol levels in to some kind of witch hunt…

Extreme Lower Back Pain— Causes and Treatment

Extreme lower back pain can be a very debilitating and frustrating condition. There can be several causes for this.

 Increasing age

Ageing means the deterioration in the strength and flexibility of the muscles and bones. The discs in the spinal column lose their fluid and elasticity, which adversely affects their ability to provide support and cushion to the spine.

Lifting heavy objects

When a weak or an old person tries to lift or pull anything that is too heavy for his strength, his muscles experience strain, sprain or spasm, which leads to pain in the back.

Degeneration of bones

Degeneration of the bones may lead to bone diseases like arthritis, osteoporosis, viral infections in the joints and some other abnormal conditions in the spinal column.

Weight gain

Weight gain due to obesity or pregnancy may cause posture problems and exert pressure on the muscles of the back and cause strain on them.

All these factors cause extreme lower back pain.

Treatment

Lower back pain can be treated by do-it-yourself efforts, if it is at its initial stage and has been caused by simple activities such as  lifting heavy weights, etc.

1. Rest

The pain can be relieved by lying in a posture that provides rest to the stressed back. This can be done by lying on the back on the floor and putting one or two pillows below the knees. This arrangement raises the hip slightly upwards and places the lower back flatly on the floor. A day or two of rest is likely to relieve the pain.

2. Exercises

Some simple exercises that stretch the lower back can also bring relief.
One exercise is to stretch the back by arching it. To do this, first lie with your face on the floor, put your hands on the floor and lift your upper body upwards so that it forms a slight arch. This will stretch your lower back. Stay in this position for 10-15 seconds and come back to the earlier position. Repeat this exercise 5-10 times.

Swimming, walking, yoga also helps to cure the extreme lower back pain.
Hot packs, massage with balm or taking over-the-counter pain killers like aspirin also helps to relieve the back pain.

If these simple steps do not show results, consult your doctor.

Back Pain Solution

Back pain generally refers both to the upper and the lower back pain.
The upper back pain, also called middle back pain or thoracic pain, starts from the base of the neck and extends up to the middle area of the back or the top of the lumber spine. Since it is also called thoracic pain, it means it covers the thoracic spine and the chest area corresponding to it.

Lower Back Pain Relief, Back Pain Treatment

Knowing how to fix lower back pain can give you a whole new lease on life. Pain the lower back area can be crippling and if you are a person who suffers from this condition constantly then I’m sure you are desperate for answers – I know, because I’ve been there myself.

Muscle spasms have been one of the most common causes of lower back pain. Though the medical world is still not sure what exactly causes spasms, but as per the recent research and studies, some of the possible factors that may lead to muscle spasms include stretching too much, carrying a heavy object improperly, and mental stress. Back spasms are usually more common in those who live sedentary lifestyles.

Get an accurate diagnosis from your chiropractor, family Dr. or a physical therapist. More often than not back pain is probably from a muscle strain and muscle spasms. Doing all this activities listed above in Tip number one cause your back muscles to be overly stressed and strained. The end result is you having really bad pain. However, if the symptom does not go away in a few days you should definitely consult a healthcare provider to determine if your condition is being caused by something more than a muscle strain and muscle spasm.

These simple exercises can be done almost anywhere and will provide immediate relief of back pain associated with poor posture. If you have ever felt the need to stand and arch your back after sitting for an extended period of time, then you understand the concept. The pain in your back is from too much flexion (slouching), so exercises that move it in the opposite direction (extension exercises) are most helpful.

Back pain is either acute, appearing quickly and intensely after an accident or injury and lasting only a short while, or chronic, recurrent pain that can come seemingly out of nowhere. The direct causes of chronic back pain are rarely obvious – simple movements, arthritis, bad posture, obesity, and internal disorders can all cause our backs to ache.

If you suffer from lower back pain and you can handle it with some sort of spray or balm freely available in the market it is ok. However, when the back pain just does not go away completely and lingers on for a couple of months it is best to get yourself to the doctor to try and determine the cause f the pain. In most cases the cause of the lower back pain will be some prescription drug that been prescribed to you and you have been taking it over a period of time. Many drugs are known to cause lower back pain if taken over an extended period of time

Lower Back Pain Causes

There are many reasons why we may experience lower back pain.  Some of the reasons that cause lower back pain are things like traumatic accidents, slip and falls, reaching for something, picking up an item without using the proper mechanics and poor posture.  Injuries include herniated discs, fractures to the vertebrae, facet problems, spondylolesthesis, degenerate disc disease, arthritis and others.   One of the most important things you can do is learn all that you can about your injury.  Learn what muscles groups are involved, what positions make your pain worse, what stretches can help alleviate pain, whether ice or heat is better.

Repetitive stress or strain is another major reason why people have lower back pain.  A person may pick up something that weighs 1 ½ pounds 40 times a day with bad mechanics and one day his/her lower back “goes out” and they will experience lower back pain.  It was not the weight that caused the person to have lower back pain, rather the poor mechanics the person was using to lift the light weight.  It’s like the old saying, the straw that broke the camel’s back.  That’s why it is important to learn good body mechanics and avoid repetitive stress situations and injuries.

Disc herniations are another major cause of lower back pain.  A disc can herniate for a number of reasons including trauma, twisting and forward flexing type activities and poor body mechanics to name a few. When a disc herniates, the outer wall of the disc is compromised and the disc material begins leaking out.  One of the worst positions for the spine, especially when you have a herniated disc is forward flexion and rotation which can cause the leak to increase even more.

Once the disc material begins leaking out, it can put pressure on your sensory nerves which in turn will cause pain.  If the material continues to leak out, it could also affect your motor nerves which mean that your muscle strength and coordination will be affected.  A microdisectomy procedure will remove only the disc material that has already leaked out.  A laminectomy procedure will remove part of the bone, lamina, to provide more room for the disc material to be without putting increased pressure on the sensory or motor nerves.

Arthritis in the spine is more common as we age.  An X-ray may reveal arthritis in the spine in our facet joints or areas around the vertebral bodies.  Typically arthritis type of pain is dull and achy and tends to be there all the time.  It has been described like a dull toothache.  It may be possible to shave down some of the arthritis, but it is important to understand what movements to avoid and what muscles to strengthen.

Learning the proper body mechanics, sitting mechanics and postural mechanics is really essential in living a life without lower back pain.  Understanding what type of body mechanics you need in order to lift 5 pounds versus 40 pounds is key to avoiding lower back pain.  Learning how to sit properly while at work, home or for recreation can help you avoid having lower back problems.  Learning to strengthen your lower leg muscles, gluts, abdominals and back muscles can really help you avoid lower back pain in the future.

Another important point is to learn how to stretch your muscles often to keep your body flexible and ready to perform the activities that you need it to.  It is important for everyone to learn more about how their bodies function, how their muscles work and how to maintain good body and postural mechanics.

Upper Back and Neck Pain Relief – Reading in Bed

Reading in bed may be the cause of why you are experiencing upper back, neck and even possibly shoulder pain. When you sustain a position for 20 or so minutes, the muscles that are creating the actions are shortening. In the case of sitting up or lying down in bed and reading, the pecs and the biceps are being used the most. When those muscles tighten without being allowed to re-lengthen, they create a scenario known as disproportionate muscle tension or DMT.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/Common Causes of Lower Back Pain:

For the majority of the people, pain at the lower back is the dilemma. They acquire this problem more frequently, and it recurs even after getting the treatment. This is also a reality that the pain at lower back is the leading medical condition with which the patients come to a doctor and take the treatment from the clinics and emergency department. Nevertheless; this is also a fact that many of the people who come with back pain are not found to have any lethal illness. The lower back pain could be developed due to a number of causes and its severity is also variable.

This should also be noted that the lower back pain could be due to some systemic problems. Therefore; a thorough medical checkup is necessary in case if pain at the back doesn’t relieve after taking conventional treatment. Strain in the muscles, presents at the lower back, is among the commonest causes of back pain. The muscles which are present at the lower back provide support to the spine, which bears the total body weight at the lower level. The stress at the lower back spine could be developed due to obesity and bad posture.

If the muscles present around the upper abdomen or on the stomach are weak, the chances of lower back pain would be increased. These muscles which are present at the upper level of abdomen also provide support to the spine. In case of their weakness, the total weight of the body is exerted on the lower spine, and hence a person feels discomfort while standing, walking and sitting, etc. It is therefore, necessary that the weight should be reduced by those individuals who are either obese or overweight. They should evaluate their posture and should correct it by themselves. They can take the help of a physiotherapist in this regard who can guide them how to decrease body weight and how to adopt a good posture for avoiding excessive weight exertion at the lower back spine. In addition, the physiotherapist may offer certain exercises, which can strengthen the muscles present at the lower back.

If pain at the lower back persists, the doctor should be consulted as soon as possible. Any pain that remains for more than three months is considered chronic, however; it does not mean that it could not be treated. A sharp pain which radiates down the leg should be evaluated by the health care provider on an immediate basis, since it could be due to nerve compression. In case of persistent pain, the soft mattress should be used during sleep. A lumber belt could help in maintaining good posture while standing, walking and sitting and hence a person may get much relief by wearing such belts. Painkillers are usually prescribed in these conditions, however; proper evaluation and diagnosis is mandatory before treatment.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/6 Possible Causes of Lower Back Pain

Back Pain is a complex problem and there is no simple answer to the question, What causes back pain?

One of the reasons that it is difficult to determine what causes back pain is that there are many structures that can be injured in the lower back (lumbar) region. You can injure the muscles, the ligaments, the intervertebral discs, the nerve roots, the cartilage that lines the joints, the bones in the lower back, over even the spinal cord. And of course you can injure multiple structures in the lumbar region.

Okay, I think you get the point that the lower back is complex.

Now, I want to try to simplify back pain and focus on Mechanical Back Pain (associated with osteoarthritis) which one type of problem that affects the lower back.

Mechanical Back Pain or Arthritis primarily affects the cartilage that lines the joints between the vertebrae of the lower back. It is referred to as mechanical back pain because compression (a mechanical phenomenon) is generally the cause of pain.

When the joints get compressed, the cartilage wears away. When the cartilage wears away, your joints get stiff and achy.

Here are 6 factors that can contribute to extra pressure on the joints of the lower back.

#1 A sedentary lifestyle and sitting in front of a computer puts extra pressure on the joints of your lower back. When you sit, your upper body weight is supported only by your lower back compared to when you are standing your ankle, knee, and thigh muscles take some of the pressure off your lower back.

#2 Bad Posture puts extra stress on the lower back. When your body is not in good alignment, you will have more pressure in the area that is out of alignment and you will also have less stability in that area.

#3 Weak Abdominal Muscles can increase the pressure on the lower back. The abdominal muscles help to maintain the position of the pelvis and lower back and stop the back from arching excessively.

#4 Weak Lower Back Muscles can increase the pressure on the lower back. The lower back muscles just like the abdominal muscles play a major role in stabilizing the lower back.

#5 Poor Flexibility can increase the pressure on the lower back. When your body is inflexible, it does not move efficiently. If your body is stiff in one area, extra pressure will be placed on another area to make up for the stiffness.

#6 Poor Exercise Technique and Poor Lifting Technique can increase the pressure on the lower back. Incorrect form during exercise and bad body mechanics during lifting will place extra stress on the lower back.

Above is just a quick and simple perspective on mechanical back pain. Prolonged sitting, poor posture, weak abdominal muscles, weak lower back muscles, poor flexibility, and incorrect exercise or lifting technique can all increase the pressure on the cartilage that lines the joints of the lower back.

As a physical therapist, I try to encourage people who suffer from a slightly achy lower back to get up from in front on the computer periodically to move around.

In addition, I encourage people to be mindful of their posture and exercise regularly to strengthen the abdominal and lower back muscles. And lastly, I encourage people to stretch regularly and use good lifting technique to decrease the pressure on the lower back.

Even though, I am a licensed Physical Therapist, this article is strictly for educational and informational purposes and is not intended to diagnose or treat back pain. If you are suffering from lower back pain, I advise you to see a licensed health professional and follow the advice of your doctor.

According to statistics, about three in every four people have experienced lower back pain at least once in their lifetime. Although many can have bouts with back pain, most of these attacks are not really serious. In fact, pain in that area is mostly caused by sprains and overstretching of muscles.

Lower back pain can range from mild to excruciating. If you have experienced the extreme type of ache in your lower back, you will agree that anyone who is suffering from it would be more than willing to drink anything just to ease the pain and be able to alleviate the stiffness. However, the treatment of this condition is actually dependent on the underlying causes. In order for you to get rid of your lower back pain for good, you first need to have an idea of what are the triggers for lower back pain.

Simple Lower Back Problem

Majority of cases of lower back pain fall into this category. Around 19 of the 20 instances of acute lower back problem can also be classified under this type, which is also known as non-specific type.

People usually experience simple back pain due to sprained muscles or ligaments. Many patients experience the pain right after bending or lifting very heavy objects. On the other hand, some feel the pain after a few hours or even days. In some instances, the pain can also be caused by slight problems with either the small joints or the disc located in the middle of two vertebrae.

This type of problem usually does not last very long. In fact, patients usually recover or report drastic improvement within 7 to 14 days. Statistics show that in some people, the pain can be dramatically relieved within a month; while in 9 out of 10 cases, the pain can be gone in less than two months. However, many also report recurrences of pain every now and then. Only a small number of cases result to chronic or long-lasting lower back woes.

Cauda Equina Syndrome

This is another underlying reason why people experience extreme aches in their lower back. Although this condition is quite rare, it is important to remember that this can be very serious and usually needs immediate medical attention.

A pinched nerve on the lower part of the spinal cord causes this syndrome. More often than not, this disorder is not only painful, but also impairs bowel and bladder functions. If you experience sudden weakness in one or both of your lower limbs and numbness in the area surrounding your anus, you need to call the doctor immediately. If not properly treated, the affected nerves might be damaged permanently.

Trapped Nerve

An irritated or strained nerve in the spinal cord is the main cause of this type of lower back pain. This can occur in about one for every 20 lower back pain cases. You will know that a nerve in the back is in trouble because you will really feel the ache along the path of the nerve. Usually, patients feel tingling pain or sensation down to the feet and legs. And sometimes, the pain you feel on your leg is much more severe than that on your lower back.

Arthritis

Another culprit for lower back problems is the inflammation of the spine joints. This is more common in elderly people. The most common type of arthritis responsible for such pain is osteoarthritis. However, young people who experience lower back pain due to joint inflammation might be suffering from Ankylosing spondylitis which can cause stiffness in the affected area.

The most common treatment for lower back pain is the use of anti-inflammatory drugs or painkillers combined with exercise and physical therapy. However, if the reason for your back pain is arthritis, you can look for supplements that contain glucosamine sulfate, which has been well documented to help ease arthritic pain and stiffness. One product that can help you alleviate lower back pain and improve your condition naturally is Flexcerin. For more information, visit http://www.flexcerin.com/

Hip Pain – Understanding Hip pain and Hip Pain Treatment

The hip is one of the main weight-bearing joints in your body.

It consists of two main parts : -

A ball (femoral head) at the top of your thighbone (femur) A rounded socket (acetabulum) in your pelvis

Ligaments, which are bands of tissue, connect the ball to the socket and help keep the ball and socket steady…….

What Causes Hip Pain ?

Pain in your hip can be debilitating, making it difficult for you to walk, climb stairs, or even pick up an object from the floor. It can limit your freedom of movement and ability to function independently. Experiencing joint pain day after day without relief can lead to “staying off” the joint — which often weakens the muscles around it so it becomes even more difficult to move.

The most common types of arthritis are : -

Osteoarthritis Rheumatoid Arthritis Post-Traumatic Arthritis Paget’s Disease Avascular Necrosis…….

Hip Pain Evaluation

While every orthopaedic evaluation is different, there are many commonly used tests that an orthopaedic surgeon may consider in evaluating a patient’s condition.

In general, the orthopaedic evaluation usually consists of : -

A thorough medical history A physical examination X-rays Additional tests, as needed……

The physical exam will also enable the orthopaedic surgeon to evaluate other important aspects of your hips and knees, including : -

Size and length Strength Range of motion Swelling Reflexes Skin condition………

Your treatment options may include :

A ]  Non Surgical Treatment
B ]  Surgical Treatment

A ]  Non Surgical Treatment of Hip Pain

Weight Management and Activity Modification : -

Your doctor may recommend that you manage your arthritis pain by maintaining a healthy weight. A balanced diet helps manage weight and helps you stay healthy. Additional pressure (weight) on weight bearing joints, such as hips and knees, may aggravate your arthritis. By managing your weight, stress is reduced on weight-bearing joints…..

Rest & Joint Care : -

The most important way to improve your condition is rest and rehabilitation. At home, general care involves “RICE”:

Rest Ice Compression Elevation Bracing and Orthotics Braces or shoe inserts may be recommended to take pressure off of certain joints…..

Physical Therapy : -

Your doctor may recommend visiting a physical therapist. Physical therapy can be helpful in the management of Osteoarthritis (OA) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)….

B ]  Surgical Treatment Options of Hip Pain

If you have not experienced adequate results with medication and other conservative treatments, surgery may provide the pain relief you long for, in addition to allowing you to return to the lifestyle and activities you enjoy. Your doctor can tell you whether you might benefit from joint replacement and explain the reasons why it may, or may not, be right for you….

Don’t Wait: Consequences of Delaying Surgery

Surgery is a difficult decision. You should talk with your doctor to better understand the risks and complications before making the decision to undergo total hip replacement; but keep in mind that osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease, which means that the disease, and your pain, is likely to get worse over time. So why wait? Consider the fact that better outcomes have been reported in those patients who had a total joint operation earlier in their disease process….

Arthroscopic Procedures

Repair or resection of torn cartilage (meniscus) from knee or shoulder Reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament in knee Removal of inflamed lining (synovium) in knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle Repair of torn ligaments Removal of loose bone or cartilage in knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, wrist. Potential Complications of arthroscopy include infection, blood clots, excessive swelling or bleeding, damage to blood vessels or nerves and instrument breakage. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, complications are infrequent and are usually minor and treatable…..

Hip And Lower Back Pain ? Common Causes Of Lower Back Pain

Hip And Lower Back Pain ? Common Causes Of Lower Back Pain

Do you want to know why most people end up visiting a doctor? If lower back pain was your choice, then you would be right.

It happens so many times that it’s almost unbelievable. If you combine this information with the fact that most people are less active and live longer in our time, you might guess that it is the main reason why lower back pain exists in such large numbers today.

Whatever the origin of the lower back leg pain might be, I’m sure it’s very annoying. You go to a number of doctors, and nobody can help you with your problem. No cure seems to work.

It can be difficult dealing with back pain. Here are some of the things that might help you speed the healing process.

First of all, you should know that you will probably get the same treatments from doctors. You will have to answer a huge number of questions so they can understand what the problem is.

They will try to address the causes in the beginning because that decides what kind of treatment you should follow.

One of the biggest causes of back pain is stress. That happens because stress causes the muscles to tighten up. That is normal actually, since muscles need to do that in order to be able to take action.

Learning to relax is something you should learn to do. You can try going to an auction site such as eBay for example and buy a stress reduction or relaxation CD. You can find them cheap on this site.

Buy only one CD for now and listen to it on a regular basis. You can try for example to listen to it for 21 days. In the end you will see that you’ll be feeling a lot better.

Something that is quite common is muscle strains. In many cases, muscle strains commonly occurs in the neck area and lower back. That is because these muscle groups tends to be more fragile and when overstretch can lead to muscle strains.

Lower back muscles are infrequent exercised therefore the chances of getting lower back pain is higher.

Lifting and stretching can be useful in most problems we mentioned so far. You should learn how to pick up objects or how to lift them. This is particularly important as you get older and your back is more fragile.

Discover what are the common causes for hip and lower back pain. Learn what exercises to strengthen the lower back

3 Common Causes of Lower Back Pain

3 Common Causes of Lower Back Pain

Low back pain keeps you from enjoying the small things in life such as spending time with your kids, taking your pooch on his daily walk, playing a game of golf with your buds, or just lounging in your favorite chair watching television. Almost every movement you make involves the use of the muscles in your back.

So naturally, when your back is injured, the quality of your life will suffer drastically. Here are some common causes of lower back pain.

Improper Use of the Back Muscles

The most common causes of back pain are strains and sprains from injuries to the back due to improper use of muscles. Back muscles can inadvertently be injured from engaging in day-to-day activities such as heavy lifting, picking up children, improper bending, toting an oversized purse, slouching in your chair, sitting for long periods of time, and sleeping on a rickety old mattress.

Being overweight can also put extra strain on the muscles in your back and cause lower back pain. The onset of pain from strains and sprains can come immediately, or days later. When the muscles in your back are injured, they will knot-up, or spasm in an effort to prevent more damage. These spasms result in severe low back pain, and difficulty moving.

Slipped or Herniated Discs

Slipped discs, also known as herniated discs can result from several things including trauma to the back, disc degeneration, aging, sudden twisting movements, excessive pressure on the disk from heavy lifting, and being overweight. A slipped disc in the back puts pressure on the nerves, causes inflammation, and varying degrees of back pain.

A herniated disc can affect more than just the lower back area. If the damaged disc puts pressure on the sciatic nerve, it results in a condition known as sciatica. Sciatica causes burning and needle-like pains that shoot from the lower back, all the way down the distance of the back of the leg.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition that can affect several parts of the body, including the back. This condition doesn’t happen overnight; it gradually causes deterioration of the discs between the vertebrae that cushion the bones. Once these disks deteriorate, the vertebrae will press against each other and cause back pain and discomfort.

Osteoarthritis is more common in older people because the body changes as you age. Body parts travel south, skin starts to thin, and your bones become more fragile due to calcium loss. This loss of calcium makes your bones brittle and more prone to compression fractures that put you at risk for back pain.

Strains and sprains from improper muscle use, slipped discs, and osteoarthritis can all cause pain in your back. Thankfully, technological advances and improvements in modern medicine have made it possible for chiropractors to offer their patients several choices to manage or end debilitating back pain for good.

If you have pain in your lower back, don’t suffer in silence. Contact a back pain specialist to ask about available treatment options.

Do you suffer from chronic low back pain, headaches, spinal surgery, or want to lose weight?
The Incorporation of Progressive Rehabilitation with latest in chiropractic care will help. Use of non-surgical spinal decompression, nutritional counseling, weight loss with the Triple Pledge Satisfaction.

www.thewinnerguide.com — Causes Of Lower Back Pain As we get older, our bodies tend to lose their muscle elasticity and tone, as well as bone strength. The discs in our spine lose fluid and flexibility, and they cant cushion the vertebrae as well anymore. Aging is one reason we get lower back pain. If the muscles or ligaments in the back have a spasm, sprain or strain, the discs in the spine can rupture or bulge. That puts a lot of pressure on the nerves that are based in the spinal cord. When there is compression or irritation in those nerve roots, the back complains by giving us pain. What causes the back spasm, sprain or strain? Usually some form of trauma or injury, for example attempting to lift something too heavy, or overstretching. Degenerative diseases like arthritis or osteoporosis can also cause lower back pain. Other potential factors are congenital abnormalities in the spine, viral infections and irritation to the joints and discs. Some life conditions can also contribute to lower back pain. These include smoking, obesity, pregnancy weight gain, poor physical condition, stress, poor posture and poor sleeping position. Oftentimes, lower back and hip pain go hand in hand. Avoiding Lower Back Pain If you take proper care of your back in your day-to-day life, you can avoid lower back pain. Be sure to have correct posture and to lift with your legs (instead of using your back), as well as strengthening your back with exercises. Be sure that your workplace follows

Exercise that Helps Reduce Hip Pain

Exercise that Helps Reduce Hip Pain

Hip pain can be very annoying and frustrating. It can limit not only your mobility, but many other activities as well, since it makes it difficult not only to walk, but even to sit or sometimes lie down.

In order to reduce hip pain, the first thing to do is see what the cause of your pain is and take care of that. Some of the most common causes are: arthritis, trochanteric bursitis, back condition, tendonitis, hip fracture, muscle strains andosteonecrosis, and a few other conditions. Hip pain can also be caused by sore feet or knee pain. Pains that are left untreated often transfer to other parts of your body. For example, if you have pain in your knee, you will most likely begin to alter your walk to take pressure off the knee joint. But this way, your hips are no longer in proper alignment and before long you will begin to feel the ill-effects of this. (If you are interested in reading a great article about how to prevent and reduce knee pain, follow this link: blogs.wellnesspartners.com )

An efficient way to reduce hip pain produced by various causes is to increase strength and flexibility of the muscles that support the hip. The strengthening exercises will help support the joint better and have less stress on the hip. Increased flexibility can also reduce pain, by relieving the stress on the joint. It is also recommended to consult a physical therapist who can evaluate your condition and prescribe a program that is appropriate for your specific condition.

Some easy exercises that will strengthen the muscles of your hip are:

LEG LIFT

Lie on your left side, with your left leg bent and the right one resting on the ground. Slowly lift your top leg 2 feet off the ground and hold 5 seconds, then slowly lower the leg. After you repeat this 5 times, change legs.

HIP FLEXION

While standing up straight, lift one leg off the floor and bend it so that you create a 90-degree angle at the hip. After 5 seconds slowly lower the leg. Repeat 5 times, then change legs.

WALL SLIDE

Stand upright with your back against a wall and feet shoulder width apart. Slowly bend your knees, sliding your back down the wall for a count of 5 until your knees are bent at a 45-degree angle. Do not bend too much further so as not to strain your knees. Hold this position for 5 seconds, and then begin straightening your knees for a count of five, sliding up the wall until you are fully upright with knees straight. Repeat this exercise 5 times.

In order to increase the flexibility of your muscles, you can do various stretch exercises. A few of them are:

LEG SWINGS

One easy leg swing exercise consists of simply lifting one foot and swinging your leg backward while standing. Hold for 2 or 3 seconds and return your foot to the starting position. Repeat 5 times with each leg. It is recommended to do this exercise while holding on to something to maintain balance.

The above exercise can also be done swinging your leg forward.

A similar exercise consists of swinging your leg to the side. While doing this, don’t allow your torso to rotate.

INTERNAL ROTATION

While lying on your back bring your knee to your chest, clasp your hands on the front of your shin and internally rotate the hip while keeping the pelvis as flat as possible.

Low-impact activities such as walking, riding the GlideCycle, biking and swimming, are great for people suffering from hip pain.

The GlideCycle is a revolutionary new trainer that provides great exercise for people with mobility limitations caused by various conditions, such as hip pain, hip replacement, arthritis, and even amputation! Knowing The Cause Of Lower Back Pain Is Essential For Finding Relief

Knowing The Cause Of Lower Back Pain Is Essential For Finding Relief

No single cause for lower back pain can be defined in isolation. It is because the types of back pains are many. Understand the pain in its proper perspective, and then decide about the type of treatment that you intend to pursue.

In the USA, the survey reports indicate that four out of five adults experience back pain at one time or the other during their lives.

Your back is such a big area, and the pain could be in any part. But the severity of the pain has nothing to do with the damage you have suffered. A small strain, can give you unbearable pain. A big muscle-wound may not do much of the damage.

Your back is a long rectangular park. Many body parts are covered under its flat area. Any disturbed area can generate pain. Plus, there are many parts of the spinal anatomy which can cause a great amount of pain!

In the lower portion of the back, there is a cluster of nerve roots that go to the arms and legs. Any irritation there causes lower back pain. It is usually due to the irritation in the smaller nerves that innervate the spine in the lower portion of the back. Muscles may be strained. There could be injuries of joints, bones, ligaments and inter-vertebral discs that may cause you severe lower back pain.

The causes of lower back pain are at times difficult to understand and yet you experience it. When pain is there, it has to be treated as such. It is only you that can think about the immediate cause that has preceded your back pain. Is it due to wrong posture while you were sleeping? Is it due to an uneven bed? Is it due to heavy work pressure you are facing these days or long time sitting or standing job?

Whatever the reason may be, keep in mind that you cannot start taking over-the-counter medications just because you have pain in the lower backside. These hard medications can create more problems to your existing troubles.

Some types of back pains are capable of creating a surgical emergency. You need to adopt such procedures only based on your doctor’s recommendations. They are:

1. Sudden bowel and bladder inconsistency
2. Step-by-step increasing weakness
3. Sudden and severe pain in the abdomen and lower back
4. Back pain due to muscle strain.

Regular exercise and regulated diet habits are the permanent solutions to back pains. Always understand the reasons for your back pain and go ahead with the consistent treatment. Any odds and treatments that are not methodical will only aggravate your lower back pain.

Importance of Treating Minor Hip Pain

Importance of Treating Minor Hip Pain

Many consider the hip as the most important part of the human body. It is region where almost every movement is produced. Even the slightest pain or injury in the hip area could hamper one’s mobility and prevent a person from accomplishing many normal, daily tasks. A clicking or snapping feeling or sound around the hip joint may be a cause of concern and should be treated examined by a doctor or therapist right away.

Treating minor hip pain symptoms is essential in preventing the development of more serious medical conditions. Individuals who want to try these remedies are encouraged to seek the approval of health professionals to utilize the benefits of these activities.

Some common treatments for hip pain are listed here. Not all of these treatments are appropriate for every condition, but they may be helpful in certain cases.

Rest

Rest is often the first treatment not only for hip pain but also for other painful conditions. In many cases, this is the only step needed to relieve hip pain. If the symptoms are severe, using a crutch or a cane may be helpful.

Use cold compress and heat application

Using cold compress and heat pads are among the most commonly used treatments for hip inflammation. Acute injuries or injuries that developed within 48 hours can be treated with cold compress to reduce inflammation and swelling. On the other hand, heat treatments can be used for chronic conditions to help relax and loosen tissues; and to stimulate blood flow to a specific area. Before resuming sports or strenuous physical activity, it is advisable to apply heat on the muscle areas that were injured.

Perform warm-ups and stretch

Stretching the muscles and tendons that surround the joint can help with some causes of hip pain. Warm-ups should be done before stretching because stretching cold muscles may injure the muscles and do more harm than good.

Undergo physical therapy

Physical therapy is an important aspect of treatment on almost all orthopedic or neuro-muscular conditions that involve pain or stress. Physical therapists use different modalities to increase strength, regain mobility, and help return patients to their pre-injury level of activity.

Take medications properly

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are some of the most prescribed medications for hip pain. In some cases, doctors may recommend the use of prescription drugs to treat minor hip pain. Patients are encouraged to take medication carefully to reduce the development of allergies, side effects, and drug interactions.

If lifestyle changes do not help, it may be time to visit health professionals to know more about other treatment options. Some cases of hip pain may require hip replacement surgery, a medical procedure where doctors surgically remove a painful hip joint and replace it with an artificial one. These artificial joints are usually made of prosthetic implants. Hip replacement surgery is usually done when physical therapy, prescription drugs, and other treatments have failed.

Individuals who suffer from serious hip condition are encouraged to utilize other forms of treatment before undergoing hip replacement surgery. Like other medical conditions, hip replacement surgery may also be accompanied by many health risks. It is important to get the right and complete information about the said option from qualified and experienced doctors before making any decision about surgery.

Understanding The Common Causes Of Lower Back Pain ? Florida Pain Management

Understanding The Common Causes Of Lower Back Pain ? Florida Pain Management

There are a variety of common causes of lower back pain.  If you are experiencing lower back pain, understanding the common causes of lower back pain can be helpful to you in developing an appropriate course of treatment.  Moreover, by understanding the common causes of lower back pain you will be in the best position to avoid and prevent a recurrence of back pain once a problem has been resolved.

There are three primary, common causes of lower back pain:

overuse of muscles

muscle strain

injury to the muscles

In many instances, all three of these primary common causes of lower back pain will contribute to a particular individual’s discomfort.
