One of the most common and misunderstood medical conditions suffered by many people is lower back and hip pain.

Because there is often no external physical signs of the injury it can be a very difficult condition to diagnose.  This article and future articles will discuss three main areas of lower back and hip pain:
“    sciatica
“    herniated disc and
“    other lower back and hip conditions.

lower back nerve painWhen you consider the stresses we put on our lower back and the hips it is no wonder that so many of us suffer from back and hip pain.  Even the very simple action of walking stresses these areas.  Whenever our feet hit the ground the shock of this action is carried to our hips and back.  If we were perfectly formed then this would not generally cause any problems.  However, very few of us can make this claim and such things as flat feet or one leg being slightly longer than the other or maybe you have a slight curve in your spine can cause extra stresses on the back and hips and lead to problems.

Some of these conditions can be corrected quite simply.  For example flat feet can be remedied by using orthotics; in this case you should see a podiatrist.  As you can see some lower back pain causes are quite simple to overcome but others such as sciatica can be more difficult.

So what is sciatica?  Basically it’s pinching of the sciatic nerve.  The sciatic nerve stretches from your feet up to the end of your spine.  The difficulty when this nerve is pinched is to have the problem accurately diagnosed.  Because the sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body extending from the spine to the feet the problem could be anywhere between the end of the spine and the feet.  This means you could feel pain anywhere in that area, even in a foot.  There have been cases where sciatica has been confused with pulling a hamstring and because stretching a hamstring could further worsen the sciatica it is very important for the injury to be correctly diagnosed.
Treatments for sciatica include maintaining a good posture, ceasing running and to seek a doctor’s advice.  Quite often the causes may not be serious but it pays to seek medical advice in case the cause is something more, for example a degenerated disc.

The third condition is herniated disc.  Although it’s possible to have a herniated disc anywhere in your spine it is most common in the lower back.  Herniated disc causes are usually due to ageing and the disc basically wearing out or due to a spinal injury when minute cracks and tears allow fluid from inside the disc to be forced out into the outer layer of the disc causing it to bulge or even break.

Herniated disc symptoms in the lower back can be pain and numbness or weakness in that part of the body.  If the herniated disc puts pressure on a nerve, this can be a cause of sciatica.  If it doesn’t put pressure on a nerve then you would generally have a backache.

Herniated disc treatments will often require tests such as a CT scan or an MRI and so it is important if you have symptoms to consult your medical professional.
